Sun Caged are going back into the studio during March 2010, hoping for a summer release of their third album with the name of 'The Lotus Effect', I assume a return visit to play in Rushden again is out of the question!!
I''m afraid I haven't got the Jap version of this album, as missing out on the excellent cover of Rusty Nail, originally from the best Japanese band ever (?). X Japan, the track appears on probably my favourite album being 'Dahlia'. Managed to hear Dragonland's version on youtube, they also to a good version of Limahl's, 'Never Ending Story', ooooOOOOOooooOOOOooooo!, beats 'woo hoo' (shoutbox link!)
Many years ago I talked to Sunblind main man Keith Abler. They were one of the first bands to open for Boston at club gigs in Waukesha (suburban Milwaukee) and Green Bay. Oh to be a fly on the wall at those two shows...
Have re-instituted the Member Poll (refer left side panel). The visual design of this site looks significantly different for users with lower resolutions versus those with higher resolutions (i.e those using 24" monitors). The minimum resolution we cater for is 1024x768. It is the equivalent of a typical 17" monitor. We'd like to gather some stats on what resolutions people are using. Thanks for the feedback.
Yeah, our coverage of this seminal band has been lacking. I have all the Trapeze stuff including 'Hot Wire'- hopefully I or one of our other illustrious reviewers can get to it in the future..
Great band and in my opinion one of the better bands to come out of the LA scene along with Malice that were more metal and less poppy...Shortino was one of the better vocalist if not the best from that scene.
Yes, he was in Spinal Tap. He played Duke Fame. He was, allegedly, so nervous about the part that he actually didn't end up saying any of the lines that had originally been written for him (despite the fact much of the film was ad-libbed anyway).
Agree that the album he recorded with Quiet Riot is superb.
This is one I've always really liked. Some of the lyrics are definitely cringe-worthy, but overall this is pretty darn good stuff. I've always loved "Thrill Of Love" and "All I'm Gonna Take" in particular.
Shortino, excellent vocalist, enjoyed his only album with Quiet Riot and his performance on the Hear 'n Aid record, what was his bit.....'and we can all touch the rainbow'
Elias? Do you copy? Great friends of mine and really really nice people! The band performs excellent in their live appearances having a lot of energy to share. Definitely a band to watch. There is a bright future ahead of them.
LaCrosse, Wisconsin Civic Center Spring 86'. Krokus with Accept and Rough Cutt. Rough Cutt opened with one of the worst and cliched sets I had ever seen. Later after Accept closed thier molten set I headed up to the beer stand passing by and bumping into a completely drunk Paul Shortino who could barely make it down the stairs. He mumbled something like 'sorry dude' and faded in the darkness...
"Dreaming Again" and "Black Widow" are my favorites on this one. I've got the double cd of this one and "Wants You" that Wounded Bird put out in 2005. "Hot -n- Heavy" and "Night Cries Out For You" are also great songs from Rough Cutt.
Although one of their weaker efforts, I still enjoy this one from time to time and only reach for the skip button when 'Hot Dog' comes on! (A terrible song to start with, but the guitar solo has some terrible notes in it!!!)
Absolutely epic. And one of my wife's very favorite albums too. Loved the videos with Tawny Kitaen. The two tracks not on the US release, "Looking For Love" and "You're Gonna Break My Heart Again", have rightfully made it onto some greatest hits releases. Including them on here just make this album epic-er, I guess. Hard to say which version of "Here I Go Again" I prefer - the album version or the radio version - both are great.
I think I agree pretty much with George here. I bought this when it came out and immediately loved "World Of Fantasy" and "A Minor Prelude / All The Way", and the rest was just OK. But it's still a pretty solid album overall.
Another good Triumph album. This came out when I was a freshman in college, and it took me longer to build up the spins, so it is less ingrained in my memory banks. I remember thinking "Follow Your Heart" sounded kinda like Boston, although I think that less so now. My track listing is different too, ending with "Little Boy Blues" (a great instrumental).
I played the heck out of this in the summer of '86. Triumph was one of those bands where I'd grab the latest album as soon as I saw it at the record store. This was definitely a little less rough than their previous work. My favorites are the first four and last songs.
Also, there is a greatest hits collection called "Classics". It contains all the usual suspects. It came out in 1989.
Adding a You Tube clip to your Tagwall
Please note, you can now embed YouTube videos on your personal tagwall. Here are the steps:
1) Grab the embed code from the YouTube clip page (copy and paste).
2) Click on your username Profile, go to the section called 'The Wall'.
3) Click on the 'Write a message' label, a white space area where you type your comment, message etc, will display.
4) Please note one specific thing: the YouTube embed code uses double quote marks as separators (" ). Change them to single quote marks (' ) beforehand. Use Notepad, or a text editor to do this by replacing " with '.
4) Then copy the YouTube code into the white space area.
5) Wrap the embed code by using the YouTube tag code at the bottom of the tagwall editor.
6) Click save, and it's all done.
Editing a Tagwall message
This is a bit arse about face, blame the developer.. haha.
1) You will see an edit/delete option out the right hand side. Click edit.
2) Then click the 'Write a Message' label to display the original message. This is the bit that's unusual. Ordinarily, you would just be presented with the message which requires editing.. grrr.. lol!
3) Make your changes, then click 'Update' to save.
Just a reminder to everyone, I am away from Tuesday 9th March through to Sunday 21st March. I am travelling down to Tasmania to do some hiking out in the wilderness. I'll be taking my laptop with me, and will be preloading some albums so that I can do some reviews in my down time. I'll be checking in from time to time, as I have one of those wireless networking Dongle thing-a-ma-jiggys, so we'll try and keep it as business as usual. Thanks.
Great album and band! "Strawberry Letter 23" is on one of my all time favorite soundtracks - "Jackie Brown" . Along with a whole lot of other great classic soul tracks. Highly recommended soundtrack and movie.
'Strawberry Letter 23' is one of my all-time favorite singles from the 70's. Their 'Stomp' album from '79 (?) was very good as well. Dr Buzzards Original Savannah Band had a huge 1# hit with 'Cherchez La Femme' and one of the members branched off to form Kid Creole and The Coconuts in the 80's.
Nice to see this here George. We need more melodic soul/ R&B coverage . I'll have a couple write-ups in the same arena soon...
Must track some of his releases down, because I brought 'Consider The Cost' from 1991 recently and like it, and it seems to be outside his golden aor period.
Agree George. Some pretty good and solid moments but overall nothing exceptional IMO.Certainly this is not Giant (maybe a Giant-like band) despite the fact that I'm a big fan of Terry Brock & Jon Roth.Actually, Roth has done a very good job in these arrangements.I've always considered him a 'bluesman' -as I've seen him in amazing live performances with Winger- but with 'Promise land' he revealed his melodic & AOR-ish self.
Well HL, I am a Giant fan like everybody else. It's like the old Jim Beam ad on TV from a few years ago.. 'this ain't Jim Beam'. Am I really that harsh? I did say <quote>otherwise solid sounding album<end quote>, You gave it a 9? Good lord.. For me, it was lucky to get an 8.
I have to disagree with some harsh words above. "Save Me" is the only bad thing on the whole CD. "Never Surrender" has fantastic guitar solo, "Prisoner Of Love" is a perfect Whitesnake-like anthem, and the riffs in "Two Worlds" blew me away. Overall, this album makes me feel like in 80s. The band proves that they can play as well as they did with Dan Huff. A fantastic piece of mature AOR! 9/10
The tour was canceled due to both band and promoters thinking bigger than the band actually were. A lot of time had passed since the last Genesis album and U.S. tour. Booking shows into the big arenas was a major mistake and ticket sales just didn't match expectations. They should have gone into theater's and small halls..
My 1st Triumph album I brought, a £2 cassette tape in a cut off bin from Woolworths! and still my favourite Triumph album, excellent tunes, I did remember Rik Emmett getting abit touchy over a none too favourable review in Kerrang.
There are some interesting selections here Chris. I might have to check some of these out. Re; Urban Tale, yes we did quite a bit of PR work for the band back in the day. Kimmo is still active, while Erkka Korhonen is involved in production work these days (he did the Firenote album from last year). I was meant to follow up that Sun Caged album back in 2007, as we did a number of Lion Music reviews at the time, plus Marcel's solo CD a few years earlier. Tobias Sammet is a pretty unusual fellow but he can sing and has provided moments of brilliance over the last decade, no disagreement there. A few years back, I used to correspond with this girl from Europe via the Soulseek portal. She was a HUGE Korpiklanni fan, somehow, visions of forest creatures, gnomes and lots of beer drinking didn't quite make it into my grey matter! lol!
I thought Heavy Pettin' were a much better band before Polydor ruined them. I used to correspond with Punky Mendoza back in the early days. Nice guy. And, yes, he was a big Angel fan!
Thanks very much Mark. Much appreciated. I gathered you guys must have been a Texas band as you were mentioned at Rockadrome which I believe to be a Texan site, related to Monster Records, also from Texas. BTW Mark, if you have unopened vinyl, it would pay to sell them quick, just in case someone wants to quiz you guys about reissuing this on CD! lol..
I am the bass player, Mark Oakes. Just found this tonight on a search. I very much appreciate the good words about our music. Yes, we are all a lot older now but we 4 still live close to each other and all still play. We are all in Central Texas where we recorded the album so many years ago. I have been trying to convince the other 3 to have an anniversary performance...it still might happen but slowly. If any of you know the music scene in the San Francisco bay area, Ron, the keyboard player and I were in a very successful local band named Fielding Mellish. All original music. Wow! $100.00 an album huh? I have at least 50 unopened vinyls. I have copied over to CD but not professionally. Love to have dialogue with anyone interested. Thanks again.
Hami has an unique voice which can be unbearable for some, though. Great riffs, melodic solos, memorable choruses all make "Rock Ain' Dead" an instant classic.
Classic i have probably played this album more than any other hard rock record, still sounds fantastic 20 + years on sykes is just insane producing riffs and solo's that just blaze.
A reminder to all members, can you please check to see if your email addresses are up to date. The PM (Private Message) system uses emails to send out notifications on any PM's sent to you by other members. Thanks.
'I'll Be Alright Without You' blew me away when i saw it on MTV cica 86/87, had the lp in Shades but i never bothered with it , one of my fave records of all time now
My favourite BOC album's are 'Fire of the Unknown Origin' and 'Revolution By Night', still seems to be missing? anyone thought/working on them at the moment? let me know as I can add either to my list. Thanks
Good to see a second review of this classic. My only disagreement is about "Fever", which I have always loved. IMO, they have never been as good as they were with this album - it just hits a major sweet spot for me.
This is one of those epic albums from my high-school days. It was my first exposure to Priest. When I checked out their earlier stuff, it didn't appeal to me nearly as much as this one did. And their latter material didn't grab me as much as this one. So for a band with many albums, this is a case where one of the "middle" ones of their career is the key one for me ( like Rush with "Moving Pictures" ). This entire album is great to me. I even think it ends stronger than it starts, with the last three songs being the strongest.
I think this is a pretty decent album - definitely a forerunner to Pride Of Lions. It kept popping up on a "recommended" list on Amazon for me, so I eventually got it. Folks were comparing it to the usual suspects (Survivor, Foreigner, Journey). It's not in that league, but it's a pleasant-enough listen. I don't have any issues with Joe's vocals; I think both he and Fergie sound fine.
Nice to see some Lawton-era Heep getting coverage! Since you've got reviews for this and 'Fallen Angel' reviewed, keep a lookout for a review of 'Firefly' - online at REAL GONE soon.
Love this album. Still listen to it a lot. Headless Cross is a great song and a great video. Tony Martin just doesn't get any respect but has did a great job fronting this band.
I like this album a lot, following the more mellow Turbo but the song titles are weak. "Heavy Metal", "Ram It Down", "I'm A Rocker" & "Monsters Of Rock"? Does a band like Priest need a song called "Heavy Metal"? Sad.
This record does blow. I have listened to it many times and I still can't get into it. It is the 2nd worst album Priest ever did (next to Nostradamus).
I was not sure what made it so bad until I read the review. The review is right about how it is missing Halford's writing skills. This has a Tipton solo album feel. His solo albums have been pretty weak. Very basic sounding with his weak vocals.
Can't believe that Joe Vana demanded this review to be erased from the GD databases just because he was being criticized by the author. I believe that everything's part of the game when having to do with music. Am I wrong?
Thanks to englandashes for finding an old printed version of this review from 2002. Originally I did remove it from our database but after 8 years in the wilderness, it's time to be reinstated. I've snuck it back in as if were 2002 all over again, and given it a hypothetical read count, thinking that might be about how many people would've read it - if it had been online! lol!
Very good album, one that I got when it came out in '90 and played quite a bit. The first four songs were all over radio at that time. The whole album is strong, but I have to keep convincing myself that those first four songs are only marginally better than the rest. I've shortchanged the rest of the album somewhat over the years. I'm a fan of all four of the Howe-era Bad Company releases - it's all good stuff. I did see BC on the tour with Damn Yankees in '91 or '92 (can't remember which year).
'Goodbye To You' from the EP was covered in the last couple of years by the Aussie chick act The Veronicas on the 'Hook Me Up' album. Also features a couple of Billy Steinberg co-writes and co-production jobs with Josh Abraham. Vikki Foxx from Enuff Z'Nuff is in the live band.
Jez and Alfine the correct spelling was The Tryanglz. there are nice demos of this band around, I have a CDr of these. here you see a picture of the line up including Mugs Cain and Ricky Phillips and somebody else whose name escapes me now

Some good bands there. One I would rather not be there, and that is Dare, judging by their recent albums. Word is they might play a significant portion of their 'Out Of The Silence' album. Nelson are interesting, been out of the loop for awhile. I'd rather be interested in Strangeways, Grand Illusion and Grand Design. The rest.. I'll slip out the back for a quiet beer or two!
