Synthwave genre
gdazegod
Are there any synthwave fans here? Some of you might be wondering .. what is synthwave?
It's a sub-genre of music that mixes 80's styled Soundtrack rock/AOR with other elements such as trance or synth instrumentals.
Some of the music/videos I've heard on YouTube, where there is an absolute glut of this stuff, sounds incredible. Mind you I've been partial to this type of sound for years, being a synth player myself.

Here's an example of what I'm referring to:

I may use this thread to put up more selected material.

Eric
G- can this all be traced back to Jan Hammer's groundbreaking work on 'Miami Vice'?

gdazegod
Quite possibly Eric, I'd also throw in some of the soundtrack work which Tangerine Dream did, but I think we'd need to go and investigate all the soundtracks from as far back as 1980 or 1981 to discover its true origins. Fascinating stuff.

The Kristine album from earlier this year is really excellent...available on CD too

Big fan and collector with a focus on the 1980's private press synthwave obscurities. Like with any genre, there's a ton of forgotten-unknown gems out there ready to be unearthed. I used to run a blog (vinyl obscurity) featuring this music, but the powers that be shut it down after 3 years.

I have that Kristine album in my Google Play Music collection/library. So will give it a listen over the Xmas break.

I like all of this! I'll go on youtube and find stuff like this and record it on cassette tape. All you need is the proper jack. Because you can't download or buy a lot of it especially the Mash-ups that people make. And it's just as well because I more than likely wouldn't buy it. It's all sort of flash in the pan stuff for me. I have lot's of cassette tapes with stuff I've recorded off of youtube, just so I'll have it. I like putting them on cassette because I can make any kind of compilation I'm in the mood for. But mostly stuff like remixes, extended versions and non-LP/cd songs.

I believe the #1 UK song 'Freak Like Me' by the Sugababes was originally a mash-up on youtube that a DJ made believe it or not. He took a Gary Numan song and others and made it.

I do like this stuff! I don't really have anything to add to the videos already up there. But this is definitely good music for working and for exercising. Kinda like the smooth jazz I enjoy, but with more energy. This time of year, I listen to a lot of Christmas music, and Mannheim Steamroller has several songs that fit this style.

Because I use Linux, I have a dedicated YouTube Audio Player app that allows me to play these and channel them through a digital recorder. Works great for me.
