3rdegree - 2012 The Long Division
Nice and yet despite my ga-ga goo-goo love affair with late 1970's prog and 3rdegee potentially being the new saviors of 'real music'; in an era of melancholy post rock progressives and metal happy Dream Theater wannabes, my expectations prior to removing the shrink wrap were not very high and indeed it took a few plays of 'The Long Division' to really warm to it.

Absolon - 2012 Darkness Rising: The Tale Of Derek Blackheart
Absolon might be a new band to many, but the key instigator of this outfit is singer Ken Pike, who's name is well remembered with white metallers Malachia back in the mid 80's. Ken's newest project Absolon is exactly where he feels comfortable. Absolon is a hybrid of old school metal. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Queensryche and Crimson Glory; crossing paths with modern metal outfits such as Kamelot, Texan prog/power metallers Stride and a raft of European power metallers with a symphonic edge.

AC/DC - 2012 Live At River Plate
This one was first released in 2011 on DVD and what a shocking display it is. Never had the band looked and sounded more tired, truly going through the motions in front of a massive audience. From the pathetic cover art to the music itself, this is a travesty which has no place in music whatsoever.

Accept - 2012 Stalingrad
Of all the veteran metal bands out there still plying their trade Accept are the pick of the bunch by a mile. In fact I'd go as far to say they're the best metal band in existence right now. High praise indeed, but the consistency of 'Stalingrad' is a notch above what most bands produce these days.

Aerosmith - 2012 Music From Another Dimension
Upon hearing this album late last year I swore to myself I wouldn't review it, simply because it was so bad on first impression. But here we are a couple of months later and upon a few more listens to this long-delayed album from the Boston rockers I really couldn't help myself.

Anthem - 2012 Burning Oath
Aside from the glaring weak points this is another strong showing from Anthem. There are no surprises and at this stage of their career that's more than welcome.

AOR - 2012 The Colors Of L.A
AOR are a regular event here at GD, but this latest one is a confusing listen mostly. Uneven flow, a myriad of styles, and what's with slapping on 4 tracks of previous material we've all heard before?

Asia - 2012 XXX
GDAZE has managed to keep pace with all the recent Asia albums. Their appearance on Frontiers Records has ensured that their legacy continues unabated. The XXX for this album title refers to their 30 year anniversary, where the original band members are back where they started from.

Atkins/May Project - 2012 Valley Of Shadows
Al Atkins and Paul May return late in 2012 for CD number 2.. Valley Of Shadows'. The riffs are still as thick as a fuII head of English beer while the back-beat is as demanding as a plate of full English Breakfast.

Best Of 2011 - 2012 (Dangerzone)
Here's Alun's year end wrap for 2011.

Best Of 2011 - 2012 (EnglandAshes)
Here is the 2011 year end wrap from Chris (EnglandAshes).

Best Of 2011 - 2012 (Eric)
Here's Eric's year end wrap for 2011.

Best Of 2011 - 2012 (Gdazegod)
A lot of people have been saying that 2011 was a pretty good year for melodic rock. I guess I'll have to go along with them. Georges' (gdazegod) review and picks from 2011.

Best Of 2011 - 2012 (jeffrey343)
Here is the 2011 year end wrap from Jeff.

Best Of 2011 - 2012 (Reyno Roxx)
Here's Reyno's year end wrap for 2011.

Best Of 2011 - 2012 george the jack
Here is the 2011 year end wrap from GD regular 'George The Jack'.

Blessed By A Broken Heart - 2012 Feel The Power
If you haven't heard of Canadian metallers Blessed By A Broken Heart by now, you will very shortly. Not having taken an interest myself in this Montreal based band before now, these guys have changed the recipe somewhat and have entered the glam HM stakes with gusto, based upon the January 2012 release 'Feel The Power'.

Bullet (Sweden) - 2012 Full Pull
With four albums under their belt, Bullet now has an impressive canon of work at their disposal.

Cannon - 2012 Burning Love
I'll have to say that 'Burning Love' wasn't really my cup of tea.

Celtic Pride - 2012 Light Up The Sky
Released independently at the tail-end of 2012, Celtic Pride are a classic rock band originating out of South Wales.

Chasing Violets - 2012 Outside Heaven
Wow, French AOR, West Coast and pop/rock never sounded or looked so good! If you can imagine a female version of Frédéric Slama's AOR project then this is it.

Circle Of Light - 2012 Rebirth
Louisiana's Circle Of Light have connections to Lillian Axe, an earlier rendition thereof it would seem.

Crazy Lixx - 2012 Riot Avenue
No two ways about it, Crazy Lixx deliver another entertaining set, and I'm one happy-chappy as a result. There is nothing wrong with this album whatsoever, and I'm glad they've returned better than ever.

D'Ercole - 2012 Dreams Of The Heart
I love the album title: 'Dreams Of The Heart' which evokes thoughts of House Of Lords or Giuffria styled rock 'n' pomp, but that would be wishful thinking on my part. No, this lot stick to edgy melodic rock with more than a rush of guitar solos to ramp things up.

Dallas - 2012 Over The Edge [ep]
He's pretty fresh-faced, but Californian Bryan Dallas is recounting the late 80's as if he were born to it. Is this guy the new Gregg Fulkerson?

Dare - 2012 Calm Before The Storm 2
The original 'Calm Before The Storm' was released back in 1998. Darren Wharton has seen fit to obtain the rights to his music, and reissue it in 2012 with a new line-up, completely re-recording the songs plus adding two new ones. The overall result is pretty good..

Departure - 2012 Hitch A Ride
So, what's the verdict? A pretty solid all round performance without having pyromaniac tendencies, that is - hot enough to make an impression but not hot enough to burn.

Des Barres, Michael (Band) - 2012 Carnaby Street
Keeping things in perspective, this is a pretty convincing effort from a guy that's seen it all within the rock industry covering 40 years and then some. It's basic, simple and to the point. No pretences here.

Dockers Guild - 2012 The Mystic Technocracy - Season 1 The Age Of Ignorance
GDAZE has been rabbiting on about the Dockers Guild project for some years now. The brainchild of American keyboardist but Italian based Douglas R Docker, the former Biloxi ivories-man has created one of the most challenging and adventurous albums of 2012, straddling progressive rock and heavy metal styles with ease.

Dokken - 2012 Broken Bones
I didn't expect much from 'Broken Bones' but I'm stunned how genuinely poor this album is.

Dominoe - 2012 Naked But Dressed
For those of you expecting a return to 1980's form from these Germans, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed with such expectations. However, I'm quite happy with the direction that Robert Papst and co have taken with Dominoe, as it keeps them out of the AOR cul-de-sac and firmly in the left hand lane of a constantly moving hard rock freeway.

Eclipse (Sweden) - 2012 Bleed And Scream
Simply put, this is damn good melodic rock, and is one of the better releases of 2012. I'm thinking this will end up in my top 10 CD's for the year. What about you?

Fraze Gang - 2012 Fraze Gang 2
With imposing stares on the monochrome front cover; these guys look like they mean business and while the tunes are still rooted in the two decades old melodic sound of Judas Priest, Ratt, Y&T and Dokken, they're filled with hard twists and heavier turns while sounding fairly contemporary.

Frozen Rain - 2012 Ahead Of Time
For those of you who enjoyed the debut Frozen Rain CD, I'm not sure you'll get value for money, but that's not to say you should check it out and listen to it anyway.

Gaskin - 2012 Edge Of Madness
This is a pretty reasonable effort, considering it's a long awaited comeback, and considering Paul's personal demons which he has now overcome.

Gene The Werewolf - 2012 Rock N Roll Animal
Gene The Werewolf are indeed local legends. Start howling for your CD copy now!!

Godz, The - 2012 Last Of The Outlaws
As expected, The Godz sound great when they sailing full on into the wind. The songs onboard won't set too many hearts a flutter, but it's good to see them active and back in the groove.

Great White - 2012 Elation
Altogether a reasonable album, and one the GW faithful will support, but for the rest of you, I'm thinking that 'Elation' won't give you happy feelings as the album title would suggest.

Gypsyhawk - 2012 Revelry And Resilience
Band guitarist Andrew Packer likens the Gypsyhawk sound to the days of 'bullshit-free 70s rock' as he likes to call it. There's none of the drown my sorrows in Jack Daniels with their songs, just back to basic rockers played with a bit of intensity and a lack of subtlety.

H.E.A.T (Sweden) - 2012 Address The Nation
The good thing with 'Address The Nation' is that the album is not over-extended. Just ten tracks delivered sharp and crisp. It might be touch shy of being the album of the year (as stated by Rock Report.be), but it'll still rank highly by the time the end of the year ratings are made. Buy with confidence.

Hafeman, Bart - 2012 Zero Gravity
Well I am pleased to report that 'Zero Gravity' did not have any effect on my physical perspective whatsoever. Yes, you do get a sense of lightheadedness listening to this album; the music is lightweight and harmless fluffy pop. Just the right ingredient to blow away those Rage Against The Machine and Tool like hardened arteries that some people exhibit.

Hardline - 2012 Danger Zone
For me, this is a surprisingly good CD. In my eyes though, nothing can touch that classic 'Double Eclipse' effort from yesteryear, though I gotta say, the production on this new one sounds like a million bucks!

Harris, Steve - 2012 British Lion
British Lion's material goes back 20 years, and despite Iron Maiden's very own Steve Harris mentoring this album, the material here falls into the AOR realms.

Hartmann - 2012 Balance
Adding to an already strong back-catalog, 'Balance' should appeal to those who like their melodic rock slightly edgy and slightly modern.

Headless - 2012 Lost In Space
It doesn't matter which direction they take us in, this is one of the worst albums I've had the displeasure of hearing in many a year.

Hess - 2012 Living In Yesterday
Hess has orchestrated a team that can do it all, though the final result isn't as well-rounded as the assembled team's credentials. Everything is kept in melodic check, without the need to diversify to all points of the musical compass, but unfortunately I come away feeling indifferent about the whole album.

House Of Shakira - 2012 HoS
'HoS' is a reminder of a band still in their prime, and it's good to see them back and in the center-lane of melodic rock during the early part of 2012.

Hunter, Tim - 2012 The Aura
British musician Tim Hunter has been quietly beavering away in North Yorkshire first as a progressive-minded folky and in recent years morphing into a full blown art rocker with a clutch of CD's under his belt. The future looks bright for Mr. Hunter and with a new album 'Ascension' waiting in the wings which he says continues down the prog/ art rock route of Alan Parsons Project, Supertramp and the like; I can't wait to hear more.

Iron Maiden - 2012 En Vivo! (Live in Chile)
Does the world really need a 'new' live album from the Irons in 2012? Is this a case of consumer overload?

Issa - 2012 Can't Stop
The album title is named after the track found on that legendary Aviator album from 1986, given a 21st century update with Issa's female vocals taking over, and wow, it sounds great!

Jackyl - 2012 Best In Show
Despite having never gone anywhere it's good to see Jackyl making a resurgence in the studio over the last few years. As expected Jackyl haven't changed at all since then, their music still retaining the same rebellious and sex drenched lyrics of their early work.

Jamison, Jimi - 2012 Never Too Late
The former Cobra and Survivor lead singer is admired within the melodic rock scene, so it's always a big event in our ever-marginalised AOR genre when Jimi releases a new album, 2012's 'Never Too Late' is a case in point.

Khaøs - 2012 Rising [ep]
I think it's clear this outfit has a future, and with a world class vocalist in Chandler Mogel in tow, they should be able to build a full albums worth of material.

Kiss - 2012 Monster
I suppose we should be grateful for new Kiss material some 40 plus years into their career, but after listening repeatedly to 'Monster' I keep asking myself is this really any good?

Larsson, Sven - 2012 Bad Mad Man
This chap has been featured at GD more often than not, and it's good to see him back in action through the latter part of 2012.

Last Autumns Dream - 2012 Nine Lives
Album number nine for Sweden's busy AOR team Last Autumns Dream..

Led Zeppelin - 2012 Celebration Day
Listening to how good the band was on this particular night, it's surprising it took five years for the band to release this. Compared to pathetic live albums reviewed here this year by Iron Maiden and AC/DC, this could almost be considered legendary.

Legion - 2012 Resurrection
A surprisingly good album, with some classy tracks and solid performances from all involved. Vince O'Regan is the star here, a talented guitarist who should soon start earning some overdue respect from the hard rock community.

Lillian Axe - 2012 XI: The Days Before Tomorrow
A slight return to form, very definitely this is a much better effort than several of their most recent efforts put together. A contender for Firefest 2012.. go and take a listen, you might just come away pleasantly surprised. I was.

Lionville - 2012 II
Wow what a collection of tunes. It's been on repeat-play for weeks now, and deservedly so. Easily one of the best AOR albums of the year, perhaps the new decade.

Little Caesar - 2012 American Dream
What we have here are 11 tracks of some great hard/blues-rock. The advantage that Little Caesar has over other bands is in vocalist and all round nice guy, Ron Young. Can this guy sing or what..

Lover Under Cover - 2012 Set The Night On Fire
'Set The Night On Fire' has some very playable tracks, but when compared out across the entire album, the overall summary reads great without being overly excellent.

Loverboy - 2012 Rock N Roll Revival
Overall, I come away very disappointed and would not go recommending this CD to all and sundry. Best stick with a Greatest Hits collection, or their back catalog.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - 2012 Last Of A Dyin' Breed
This is on par with the latest UFO album for evidence of a band that needs to consider hanging it up.

Magnum - 2012 On The Thirteenth Day
Braced with trepidation for 2012's 'On The Thirteenth Day', I wasn't quite sure what I'd find, but I did come away far happier than I had on their recent previous efforts, but only just.

Manowar - 2012 The Lord Of Steel
This band used to be truly heavy, but based on this showing the gig is up. Never have Manowar sounded so poor..

Marx, Richard - 2012 Inside My Head
For most listeners stuck in an 80's timewarp, it's nice to know that Richard Marx is not lost to us.. far from it. Still capable of great songwriting, and mixing it up style-wise as you heard with these songs, 'Inside My Head' is a subtle reminder to all that class doesn't just disappear overnight.

Midnight Blue - 2012 Take The Money And Run (reissue)
Because Yesterock Records have opened this album up for reissue with extra bonus tracks, it's time to give 'Take The Money And Run' a more critical overview, because our original review was fairly brief and extremely blunt.

Morse, Neal - 2012 Momentum
You can enjoy this album without the need of a university education because it contains the basic classic elements that appeal to non-prog fans. Easy to spot in this glorious patchwork are some of my favourites, ranging from Kansas, Styx, Jethro Tull and Starcastle.

Night Ranger - 2012 24 Strings And A Drummer - Live And Acoustic
A 30th anniversary performance from the legendary Night Ranger sees them operating in the unplugged and acoustic environs for this dual CD/DVD set.

Nubian Rose - 2012 Mountain
Nubian Rose aren't just a great looking gal with a support cast. Oh no this is a fully cohesive band that are stuck like a temporal time traveller in the late great 80's. You'll find your favourite 80's hard rockers mixed in among the grooves of this retro-rocking CD.

Oliver Dawson Saxon - 2012 Motorbiker
This is a very mixed bag, with predictably the more classic material outweighing the stabs at being contemporary. I can see their need to try and not pigeonhole themselves as relics, but even with Saxon I feel like it doesn't work.

On-Off - 2012 Don't Forget The Roll
Another in a recent line-up of albums that purveys the message of sex, drugs and rock n roll. Not that it's a new thing, but Italians On-Off have discovered a little sub-genre of hard rock that works for them, and a few others too it would seem..

Osukaru - 2012 Salvation
This is a really good album, but could've been an excellent one with a different singer. However, it's worth having a listen, and it's another mainly Swedish band to be added to the impressive resume of contenders from that fair country.

Outlaws, The - 2012 It's About Pride
This album got a swag of positive reviews last year, including some from our own staff writers who placed the CD in their top 10 picks. So while we (correction, I) maybe slow to getting around to this album, I'm better late than never.

Oxygen - 2012 Final Warning
For a first effort this is pretty good, the band probably need to tighten up in the songwriting department, less goofy lyrics and less predictable arrangements.

Parr, John - 2012 The Mission
This is a brilliant album from Parr, as good as anything he has previously recorded. For AOR fans it's also a welcome treat, as the man has lost nothing in the passing of time.

Player - 2012 My Addiction [ep]
The return of GDAZE favourites Player, as they release a promotional EP ahead of their forthcoming new album.

Pleasure Addiction - 2012 Independence
Here's a French band that are making waves in the glam/melodic rock genre. Pleasure Addiction come from Paris, and while their personnel all participate in other well known French bands too, their union within this band is a great way to let off some steam in a melodic/glam combustion!

Prayer (Finland) - 2012 Danger In The Dark
Overall 'Danger In The Dark' is a bit of a mixed bag. I believe Tapani Tikkanen needed to take a few more risks with his music. It's safe to the point of being a shark without any teeth.

Presto Ballet - 2012 Relic Of The Modern World
For Kurdt Vanderhoof, Metal Church must seem like a million years ago. Thankfully his other pet project Presto Ballet is alive and well, and continues in a progressive rock haze, leaving melodic exhaust fumes for all of us to follow happily.

Pride Of Lions - 2012 Immortal
I've always liked PoL because their music sits right in the center of AOR, which as we know is the cornerstone genre of this website. A hand fit glove situation as it were, and on that basis, 'Immortal' does not disappoint for the true AORster among you. If you like your AOR somewhere north of Survivor and perhaps east of Dakota, then Pride Of Lions is for you.

Rabin, Trevor - 2012 Jacaranda
Though it's not 'Wolf' nor 'Don't Look Away' or even remotely close to '90125' era Yes, I'll take this Jacaranda anyday!

Reverence - 2012 When Darkness Calls
Coming to light earlier in the new decade, American band Reverence must surely be a supergroup in stature, considering the pedigree of all concerned. With personnel sourced from Tokyo Blade, Savatage, Crimson Glory and Jack Starr's Burning Star, this just lives, breathes and smells heavy metal..

Room, The - 2012 Open Fire
'Open Fire' is a highly infectious progressive pop album with comparisons to Saga and early It Bites although when all is said and done, it's the Canadian pomp masters that make the biggest mark on The Room's musical world view.

Roq Royale - 2012 Roq Royale
From my perspective, there's not a lot that needs to be said or written that hasn't already been covered on our 2009 article for this album. Glad to see that one mystery has been solved, one rarity is now officially in the public domain, and that the whole Roq Royale saga can now be laid to rest.

Rush - 2012 Clockwork Angels
Apparently Classic Rock Magazine gave the album a 9/10 review, and called it Rush's best release in 30 years, and they wouldn't be too far off the mark.

Sabu, Paul - 2012 Bangkok Rules
Musically Sabu hasn't changed, this is still the same brand of hard rock he's been playing for decades and for most of those who read this site that's definitely a plus.

Saga - 2012 20/20
I quite enjoyed '20/20' but realise also that it's a continuation of their more recent albums and is not breaking new stylistic ground for the band.

Sapphire Eyes - 2012 Sapphire Eyes
It's clear that Niclas Olsson knows a thing or two about writing songs with a strong verse structure with even stronger choruses. This is the AOR recipe by design, and he seems to found the kitchen formula that works for him.

Savage - 2012 Sons Of Malice
This album is simply boring. It's along the same lines as latter day efforts by other similar bands like Tank, Demon and Tygers Of Pan Tang, mostly droning hard rock, with none of the energy that made the band somewhat notable in their distant heyday.

Saylor, David A - 2012 City Of Angels
So there you have it. Ten tracks, three covers, and AOR played in a sometimes mellow pace, but on occasion it rears its head. The redeeming feature obviously has to be Saylor's great voice, plus the style of music is very centered into that mid-late 80's era.

Schon, Neal - 2012 The Calling
It's good that Schon is still keeping his solo gig happening, though compared to his other work, this is nowhere near the quality of past releases. In total, I think only half of the album appealed to me, the other half was a real tough listen. Fans of 'Late Nite', 'Beyond The Thunder' and 'Voices' may not get value for money here..

Shotgun Alley - 2012 Dying To Survive
This is a bit of an epitaph then. Shotgun Alley - melodic rockers from New Zealand featuring Australian lead singer Mark Falcon (former 'Home And Away' actor) with the band apparently relocated to El-Lay, only to chuck it all in after this, their second album was completed. Man, doesn't life suck?

Smaavik, Bente - 2012 1979-2011
Norwegian singer Bente Smaavik is better known as one of the dual lead vocalists for 80's outfit Blonde On Blonde. This CD could very much be considered a 'showcase CD', the material starting out from the pop/punk era of the late 70's, migrating through melodic rock eras and into more recent timeframes. For fans of Norwegian rock, you would do well to grab a copy of this just for its historical value.

Sonic Station - 2012 Sonic Station
I won't muck about trying to sum this album up. In all haste, grab this album pronto if you enjoy a mere modicum of melodic music. It really is worth a small investment to procure on CD. Enough said..

Spiro, Mark - 2012 It's A Beautiful Life
'It's A Beautiful Life' is good for what it is, though in hindsight, it could've been so much better too. A pass mark, but only just.

Springfield, Rick - 2012 Songs For The End Of The World
This is another successful outing from a certified legend. It's by far the best album from Springfield since he returned in 1999 with 'Karma' and in its own way sits up there with his 80's work.

State Of Salazar - 2012 Lost My Way
Swedish West Coast fans should seek this out wherever you can, it's a definite teaser towards what State Of Salazar are likely to achieve in the future. Their potential is assured.

Stewart, Kenny - 2012 Skullthuggery
Without doubt, 'Skullthuggery' is an improvement on its predecessor. I enjoyed the 'big' sounding production, bountiful drums, sizzling guitars and aggression. The fact that there is extra participation other than Kenny provides a fuller sound with multiple input.

The Vicar probably won't appeal to everyone, but some big prog names appear including Tony Levin, Theo Travis, Lewis Taylor and others and I think its swell. Some of it reminds me of Stackridge.

Checked the samples of this Vicar album on I-tunes and have to say 90 secs of each track was more than enough to save me money buying it. Sorry Eric but I thought it was terrible. No energy, no drums

The Vicar -'Songbook #1', possibly my disc of the year. The Beatles, 10cc and Britpop rolled up in a beautiful package- a stunner! Who is this guy?

Went to Joplin in 2011 to volunteer. As an insurance adjuster what I saw in Joplin was like nothing I had ever seen before. This looks so much like what I saw in Joplin. Prayers to all affected.

They say the front of the twister was a mile wide. Wow!

We were missed by an F1 twister by just 4 city blocks a couple years back. Brutal destruction and still not fully recovered. Can't imagine living through yesterdays F4-5 in Moore. Terrible.
