Blue (UK) - 1973 Blue
A must hear for fans of 10cc and Supertramp, early 70's pop at its best!

Blue Ash - 1973 No More No Less
Described as one of the great lost bands of the 70's, Blue Ash come from the same school of power-pop as The Raspberries, both bands admired for their sugary sweet melodies and originating out of Ohio.

Cirkus (UK) - 1973 One
I'm sure Cirkus kicked themselves straight through 'til Sunday for turning down an offer from CBS but unbelievably that's what this north-east England band did. The sadness in the Cirkus story is these Geordies really did have talent, loads of it and why they were not signed to a larger label down the road is a big unknown.

Climax Blues Band - 1973 FM/Live
Critics in the know have called 'FM/Live' one of the best live recordings in rock history. While it's not up to par with 'Frampton Comes Alive', 'Strangers in the Night', or 'Live And Dangerous', it certainly is a great performance and if you were to buy just one Climax Blues Band album, 'FM/Live' should be all you need.

D.Beaver And Combinations - 1973 Combinations
'Combinations' is one of my 'Deserted Island' albums and for those who think American rock from the early 70's is either ham-fisted or blue jean dull (a fair complaint), you need to give this record a spin.

Deep Purple - 1973 Who Do We Think We Are
As was Purple's want, there were only seven tracks on display and by all accounts that was a miracle judging from the mostly disastrous recording sessions.

Doobie Bros - 1973 The Captain And Me
I might be biased, but I don't think there's a dud song on this album one iota.

Exile - 1973 Exile
This really is a dynamite record, rooted in the workman-like Midwest style popularized by bands like Jo Jo Gunne, REO Speedwagon and Grand Funk Railroad with splashes of southern rock that make for a heady brew.

Faces, The - 1973 Ooh La La
Faces were often treated as a back-up band for Stewart's star on the rise and 'Ooh La La' would be the last studio album from the band made up of former members of Small Faces and the Jeff Beck Group.

Fisher, Matthew - 1973 Journeys End
A groundbreaking keyboardist, Matthew Fisher's work with Procol Harum is legendary. He also has four solo albums which are all quite different from his work with Procol Harum, leaning more to pop and rock styles of varying quality although I find his first 'Journey's End' to be his best most satisfying.

Fleetwood Mac - 1973 Mystery To Me
As far as I'm concerned this period between 1971 and 1975 was Fleetwood Mac's most creative with 'Mystery To Me' their crowning achievement. While some might disagree considering the massive success of 'Rumours' and follow up albums well into the 1980's, Fleetwood Mac on 'Mystery To Me' hit all the right buttons mixing rock and pop with prog, country and a little blues for an intoxicating cocktail that still holds up today.

Forest Green - 1973 Forest Green
This charming record comes to us from the city of brotherly love, better known as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Oddly referred to a jazz rock or fusion band; Forest Green's full-range sound was really much more than that. In fact I would place them more in line with Lee Michaels, Sugarloaf and the first Shadowfax album in a smokin' blend of pop and progressive rock moves.

Frampton, Peter - 1973 Frampton's Camel
No one in his or her right mind could have predicted the success Peter Frampton would eventually achieve based on this album, but it certainly was the blueprint for the AOR freight train that was 'Frampton Comes Alive'.

Fruupp - 1973 Future Legends
Signing to the legendary Dawn label in early 1973 and releasing 'Future Legends' in October of that year, Fruupp had plenty going for them with stellar musicianship and quality songwriting that for some reason never really took off in a big way.

Gentle Giant - 1973 In A Glasshouse
Often lauded as one of the key prog rock groups of the 70's, this is for many the definitive Gentle Giant album and one that looked set to break the band massively in the US yet bizzarely failed to be released in a country that seemed to appreciate the bands significant musical charms more than stodgy England, where the band hailed from.

Golden Earring - 1973 Moontan
A Dutch institution for much of their career, and with this album, it was arguably their break-out performance internationally.

Granicus - 1973 Granicus
Short-lived and doomed to failure, Granicus were a Cleveland Ohio based outfit who got together in the early 70's. In a nutshell - relentless wailing soaring riffing guitars, loud frenetic drumming and super high vocals (that make David Surkamp and Geddy Lee sound like Lemmy), interlaced with passages of full on almost psychedelic whimsy.

Guess Who, The - 1973 #10
Is The Guess Who the greatest band to come out of Canada? A tough call, but I tend to think so although I know a few Rush fans that might throw their hat in the ring..

Hamlet - 1973 Hamlet
The music of Hamlet is lock step with other bands of the era such as Badfinger, The World, Richard Twice and Fickle Pickle. In other words, quality harmony based pop steeped in The Beatles tradition.

Hollies, The - 1973 Out On The Road
One of the harder to find albums in The Hollies labyrinth-like discography, 'Out On The Road' was the second and last record to feature Swedish vocalist Mikael Rickfors. Despite what some fans will tell you, The Hollies experiment with Michael Rickfors was a success in my opinion, both 'Romany' and 'Out On The Road' well worthy of your collection..

Hudson And Ford - 1973 Nickelodeon
Considering Hudson-Ford's Strawbs background and that former band mate Rick Wakeman appears here, you will be forgiven expecting 'Nickelodeon' the pair's first album to be a progressive rock extravaganza, but it's not even close. A stunning record with a clutch of great songs..

Ides Of March - 1973 Midnight Oil
The Ides were a carbon copy of Blood, Sweat and Tears and Chicago - brass heavy and soulful on their early work. The band of course was the 'vehicle' for future Survivor-ite Jim Peterik.

Jane - 1973 Here We Are
Jane's oeuvre can be a crap shoot, but their second album 'Here We Are' is easily one of the Hannover based band's better offerings.

Jobriath - 1973 Jobriath
A good record for what it was actually, but by the time Jobriath received his extraordinary (for the time) advance of $500,000 dollars for his first album, Glam rock was raising its glittery head and Jobriath was the new David Bowie and T-Rex.

Lazarus - 1973 A Fools Paradise
Having recently reviewed the debut Lazarus album, it was appropriate to review their second (and last) album, 'A Fools Paradise' released two years later in 1973.

Liverpool Echo - 1973 Liverpool Echo
Rev-Ola Records have recently reissued the album complete with extensive liner notes and photos giving music fans a chance to finally hear and enjoy this legendary album.

Loggins And Messina - 1973 Full Sail
With their impressive history out of the way, does 'Full Sail' measure up enough to be added in your collection? Indeed, if you are partial to west coast sounds and early 70's pop, this record has it all.

Montrose - 1973 Montrose
The results of 'Montrose' were unparalelled, an album which thirty years later sounds as fresh as it probably did thirty years ago.

Painter - 1973 Painter
Painter were a Canadian band originating from Calgary, Alberta. Musically, there is a load of BTO references, but the band are high on melody and vocal harmonies, which gives this album a leaning toward a band like Trooper who would find success in Canada later in the decade.

Poco - 1973 Crazy Eyes
You won't find screaming guitars and over blown keyboard solos here, but you will find top notch songs and performances by one of America' finest bands.

Quatro, Suzi - 1973 Can The Can
The debut album from Detroit tough girl Suzi Quatro..

Raspberries, The - 1973 Side 3
Unusual to see a band this far back in history represented on GLORY-DAZE? Hardly, and besides, this album is a superb example when a power-pop band heavily influenced by The Beatles decides to get heavier and produce a 'rock-oriented' album.

Renaissance - 1973 Ashes Are Burning
Orchestrated to the hilt and autumnal in feel, this record is nothing like Yes or Genesis who sound rather pedestrian in comparison. Renaissance instead, create a unique musical landscape that's worth visiting over and over again.

Robertson, B.A - 1973 Wringing Applause
Glory Daze trainspotters will recognize the abbreviated B.A. Robertson on songwriting credits ranging from Cliff Richard's 'Carrie' to Mike+The Mechanics' mega-hits 'Silent Running' and 'The Living Years'. His solo album 'Wringing Applause' is a concept album based on life on the stage, the arrangements are clever, progressive and slightly cheeky, although lyrically it's a bit too wordy for my tastes..

Sayer, Leo - 1973 Silverbird
This is the debut album for acclaimed British pop artist Leo Sayer.

Scrubbaloe Caine - 1973 Round One
Streetheart, Loverboy and Prism completists will want 'Round One' and their second release 'Street Level' in their collections as well as those interested in early Canadian rock history, but 'Get Lucky', this album is not. You have been warned.

Sherbet - 1973 On With The Show
This was a fantastic band that created some of the best rock n' roll to come out of Australia and their second album 'On With The Show' is one of their finest works.

Shoot - 1973 On The Frontier
Another forgotten album it seems, yet 'On The Frontier' is one of the better 'one-offs' related to the band Renaissance that I've come across. In fact I'll go so far as to say it's one of the better albums of 1973 that you never heard.

Stevens, Cat - 1973 Foreigner
Transitioning from folk, peace and love, Cat Steven's 1973 album 'Foreigner' is a contrast, mixing up classical rock and Tower of Power driven funk.

Stray Dog - 1973 Stray Dog
Just what is a hard rockin' Texan trio doing on a mainly progressive rock label circa 1973? Well, you can blame Greg Lake from Emerson Lake And Palmer for that situation.

Styx - 1973 The Serpent Is Rising
Styx's third record 'The Serpent Is Rising' is the strongest of the Wooden Nickel era albums with the trademark mixture of Midwest hard rock and British progressive rock that would take them from Chicago night clubs and high school gymnasiums to Madison Square Garden and the L.A Forum a few years later.

ZZ Top - 1973 Tres Hombres
This was the first really classic album from ZZ Top and still rates as easily one of their best.

Lisa Price 'Priceless' Mini album due out on CD for the first time through Yesterrock on May 31st.

The Vicar probably won't appeal to everyone, but some big prog names appear including Tony Levin, Theo Travis, Lewis Taylor and others and I think its swell. Some of it reminds me of Stackridge.

23/05/2013
Checked the samples of this Vicar album on I-tunes and have to say 90 secs of each track was more than enough to save me money buying it. Sorry Eric but I thought it was terrible. No energy, no drums

23/05/2013
The Vicar -'Songbook #1', possibly my disc of the year. The Beatles, 10cc and Britpop rolled up in a beautiful package- a stunner! Who is this guy?

Went to Joplin in 2011 to volunteer. As an insurance adjuster what I saw in Joplin was like nothing I had ever seen before. This looks so much like what I saw in Joplin. Prayers to all affected.

They say the front of the twister was a mile wide. Wow!

21/05/2013
We were missed by an F1 twister by just 4 city blocks a couple years back. Brutal destruction and still not fully recovered. Can't imagine living through yesterdays F4-5 in Moore. Terrible.
