10cc - 1992 Meanwhile
| |
1992 saw a 'sort of' comeback reunion for British pop legends 10cc. 'Meanwhile' fuses the 80's pop vibe of British acts with high production values with an edgy American feel. It has all the hallmarks of a failed recipe, and so it proved at the box office.
|
1st Avenue - 1992 Tears And Triumph
| |
One of the best Dutch albums around, and certainly the AOR fans took notice as it made it's way into the years best albums in various publications and charts throughout Europe.
|
21 Guns - 1992 Salute
| |
21 Guns was the project/band put together by ex Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham. 21 Guns sound ventured into solid North American flavored melodic rock, though with a hint of Thin Lizzy's sound which is not surprising really.
|
2Hot4U - 1992 Flame
| |
Ok listen up Saga fans. If you haven't heard of 2Hot4U before, then you will by the end of this review. From southern Germany, this quintent win uncontested - the award for best Saga emulator on the planet!
|
Among Thieves - 1992 Among Thieves
| |
Originating from Melbourne, this 6 piece came to prominence during 1992 with this diverse slice of melodic rock. Released on the fairly bigtime label East/West this got quite a bit of airplay down under.
|
Asia - 1992 Aqua
| |
1992's 'Aqua' would have to be Asia's most underrated work. An album which just seemed to slip by, considering it was a mini-comeback of sorts. A lush affair, it was also the introduction of John Payne to the band.
|
Atlantis Airport - 1992 By Nature
| |
A fairly rare record this one - from Switzerland's Atlantis Airport. Musically, it's part prog, part melodic rock, with a sound that touches on Eloy and 2 Hot4U, both bands reviewed here previously.
|
Bangalore Choir - 1992 On Target
| |
On the face of it the band never stood a chance, signing to Warner Brothers in the face of the grunge onslaught, and offering a 1989 era Whitesnake sound that the public was apparently tired of.
|
Believers, The - 1992 Extraordinary Life
| |
An excellent trio from the UK with a smooth radio style of melodic rock. The closest comparison would be The Outfield, combining their great sense of melody and commercialness.
|
Black Orchid - 1992 Earotica
| |
Over the years, we've heard a few Boston clones in our time, but perhaps none go so close as fellow Massachusetts rockers Black Orchid.
|
Blue Ruin - 1992 Blue Ruin
| |
Blue Ruin were a melodic rock outfit from New Haven Connecticut. They plyed their trade during the early nineties, and though based in the Northeast Ivy League territory, their music was southern-fried, in a commercial sense such as Tangier and Aerosmith, though there is a slight Guns N Roses flavor in the mix, thanks to the vocals and guitarwork.
|
C'vello - 1992 C'vello
| |
A band originating out of Baton Rouge Louisana, playing a style between pure hard melodic rock, and a dance oriented groove. How can that be you may ask? Well, the likes of Robbie Nevil, Robert Tepper and Judson Spence can pull it off, so can these boys.
|
Candy Harlots - 1992 Five Wicked Ways
| |
Taking a hint of Hanoi Rocks street-sense, a dabble of L.A Guns heaviness, and the inevitable Guns n Roses visual comparison, the Candy Harlots have come up with a package that has a foot in all camps.. Sleaze, metal, melodic and pop.
|
Casanova - 1992 One Night Stand
| |
It will come as no surprise to many that two of the best German releases of the 90's decade were the first pair of Casanova albums. The debut from 1991 and this one a year later.
|
Casino - 1992 Casino
| |
The one-and-only release by Casino is notable for two things - being the only concept album I know that's set in a casino! A prog release with many of the British greats playing on it.. including Clive Nolan, Karl Groom, Jon Jeary and the late Geoff Mann.
|
Collins, Ron - 1992 Simple Man
| |
For those of you not familiar with christian melodic rock/AOR, Ron Collins was previously the voice behind 80's outfit Twenty Twenty, who released two fine albums between 1985 and 1987.
|
Cua, Rick - 1992 The Way Love Is
| |
The singing Christian bassist Rick Cua delivers his eighth solo album since going it alone way back in 1982.
|
Dakota, Jamie - 1992 Jamie Dakota
 | | Described recently by an Ebay trader as being a hybrid of Witness, Laos and Joal, I can tell you that Ms Dakota sounds nothing of the sort! Any attempt to sell a CD huh? |
Daltrey, Roger - 1992 Rocks In The Head
| |
Gerard McMahon might have been the brainchild behind much of this, but Daltrey makes it happen. His unmistakable presence gives the songs an edge that many solo artists never could, save for Michael Bolton perhaps.
|
DC Drive - 1992 DC Drive
| |
For those in the know, DC Drive were of course, the third incarnation of Detroit melodic rockers Adrenalin.
|
ELI - 1992 Beware Of The Dog
| |
The 90's were a decade that didn't sit that comfortably with me at all. Blame the Seattle movement, Kurt Cobain whatever.. the life was sucked out of the excessive 80's and left to dry on the rack. Many established acts tried to continue on and failed in the process. Some local area acts carried on oblivious of the trends. One of those were Mississippi based ELI.
|
Emmett, Rik - 1992 Ipso Facto
| |
'Ipso Facto' is more AOR than I'd originally anticipated. Expecting a guitar-instrumental alongside some of the solo spots previously heard on earlier Triumph albums, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that there are more vocal efforts..
|
Fair Warning (Germany) - 1992 Fair Warning
| |
It's been described as one of the greatest albums in melodic hard rock. Tall order perhaps, but wherever you go around the Internet - particularly to the shrines of the genre, You will find many admirers of the debut Fair Warning album.
|
From The Fire - 1992 Thirty Days And Dirty Nights
| |
Overall though, the mix is probably too much on the light side, even with the Lafferty, Beauvoir and Regan contribution, especially when compared to their prior projects. Though I've never been a fan of Lafferty's guitar work for some reason, he sounds pretty reasonable on this one.
|
FX - 1992 In The Sky
 | | This is a beaut little 5 tracker from Californian based FX. |
Giant - 1992 Time To Burn
| |
For AOR fans, the first two Giant albums are a compulsory addition to your collection.
|
Great White - 1992 Psycho City
| |
By 1992, Nirvana were the predatory fish on MTV and radio- forcing the popularity of bands like Great White to plunge to their depths. Coming off their 80's Glory-Daze, Great White refused to become extinct and entered the 90's as ferocious as ever. The result is their 1992 effort 'Psycho City'.
|
Howell, Kurt - 1992 Kurt Howell
| |
This is a surprisingly good and consistent album from a prolific songwriter and musician. For a reference point, chuck in names like Bill Champlin, Russ Irwin, and Bill Meyers and you'll happily be in the middle ground looking for out of bounds!
|
Howell, Stephanie - 1992 Facing The Fire
| |
Australia has had its fair share of female singers since the early 80's. Names such as Lisa Bade, Sharon O'Neill, Jenny Morris, Gyan Evans, Wendy Stapleton and the Hammond sisters from Cheetah all bring back memories. Add to the list was Sydney-sider Stephanie Howell, who came and went it would seem in the twinkling of an eye and within the revolution of one CD.
|
Iron Maiden - 1992 Fear Of The Dark
| |
Not one of Iron Maiden's best efforts.. unfortunately..
|
Irvine, Chris - 1992 Chris Irvine
| |
Trying to find out anything on Chris is like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but the music is a superb example of AOR meeting melodic pop. Chris' voice (IMHO) has some uncanny stylings to Boulevard's David Forbes, while the music is slick and well produced, ever so catchy, and hummable.
|
Kyle, Jaime - 1992 The Passionate Kind
| |
A well loved artist in melodic rock circles is Nashville based singer/songwriter Jaime Kyle. Many of her songs strike the right chord and tone for me, as they do for others: effortless, haunting, lyrical, and with a headstrong spirit of rebelliousness that comes across in her music.
|
Legend - 1992 Legend
| |
Despite the dubious origins of this band, Legend deliver an album that is one of the better Christian hard rock albums out there, outside the likes of perennial favorites White Heart and Petra etc.
|
Legs Diamond - 1992 Captured Live
| |
Does anyone else in the world know Legs Diamond once played Wembley Stadium to 72,000 people? Well the venue this was actually recorded at was La Semana Alegre Outdoor Festival in Texas, but based on the volume of the crowd and the rapture given to Legs you'd swear there were a few hundred thousand on hand.
|
Lightspeed - 1992 So Where Exactly Are We?
| |
Even with the variety found on the disc, there is plenty of pomp and circumstance in the 59 minutes plus which should bring a smile to aficionados of all things 'over the top' and with a couple scorching live tracks as an added bonus.
|
Linman - 1992 Heaven Calls
| |
I recall this album causing a bit of a stir on the AOR underground back in 1992. From Finland, Patrick Linman's musical style is closest to a guy like Stan Meissner.
|
Magnum - 1992 Sleepwalking
| |
Sadly this is a rehash of previous albums, where the rich keyboards, great lyrics, and quality music only sparkle on a few tracks.
|
Malloy, Mitch - 1992 Mitch Malloy
| |
The greatest contribution that the small North Dakota town Dickinson has ever given the world is the voice and talent of singer Mitch Malloy.
|
Mason - 1992 Big Illusion
 | | Another of the German melodic hard rock bands during the early 90's were keyboard laced quartet Mason. |
Masquerade - 1992 Masquerade
| |
The TNT influence is very much the flavour throughout the 14 tracks on offer, and all in all, it represents solid value for money. For those who love that 'Tell No Tales' and 'Intuition' era from TNT, you will love Masquerade.
|
Max, The - 1992 Vinyl Valentine
|
|
If bands such as Company Of Wolves, Xenon, Tonto Tonto and The Sighs register any excitement on your thrill-o-meter, then The Max might just be worth a listen.
|
McLachlan, Craig - 1992 Hands Free
| |
Craig McLachlan is better known as an Australian actor, appearing on shows such as Neighbours and BUGS. His love of music is quite well known too, he is a huge KISS fan, and it shouldn't be surprising that his solo album 'Hands Free' is a damn good effort. Not the wishy-washy sort of music we'd expect from a TV personality come rock wannabe. This is glorious radio rock mostly.
|
Meissner, Stan - 1992 Undertow
| |
Stan Meissner is long regarded as one of Canada's premier melodic rock solo artists. As written about elsewhere on GLORY-DAZE, just about everything he gets involved with musically, has a touch of class about it.
|
Mothers Finest - 1992 Black Radio Won't Play This Music
| |
After reuniting in the late '80s, MF aimed at the urban contemporary market with 'Looks Could Kill' a pedestrian, forgettable effort that had very little going for it. But the Led Zeppelin influenced band more than made up for that artistic blunder with the heartfelt 'Black Radio Won't Play This Record'.
|
Ochsenknecht - 1992 Ochsenknecht
| |
We've seen it so many times before. An actor who decides that he/she can foot in the music industry. One of these is German actor Uwe Ochsenknecht, who is reasonably well known given his wide range of performances on TV, film and the stage. Back in the early 90's, he left us with a couple of albums that left quite a few people impressed with his ability.
|
Reid, Benson - 1992 You Get What You Give
 | | Here's an album from Toronto based muso Benson Reid which flew under everyone's radar during 1992. |
Renegade (Sweden) - 1992 Time To Choose
| |
I can hear Treat, Alien, Bad Habit and Glory mixed in together. The approach is quite racy, with an emphasis on strong guitar lines and keyboard/piano melodies. Fans of the aforementioned bands will definitely get a kick out of this lot.
|
Restless Heart - 1992 Big Iron Horses
| |
Probably the best exponent of the crossover country/adult contemporary (A/C)/AOR market, and a band who has spawned many imitations out of Nashville, all trying to cash in on this market.
|
Rox Diamond - 1992 Rox Diamond
| |
There's a lot to like about this L.A based outfit. Heavy as horses, but with a glossy sheen not unlike the bands Lion or Leatherwolf. Primarily a vehicle for keyboardist Paul Daniels, this band started life off known as Casanova, but as there was already another well known band by the same name out of Germany, a name change to Rox Diamond was in order.
|
Saints And Sinners - 1992 Saints And Sinners
| |
I have to say from the outset, I love this album. It's got a lot of balls, and it's furious in the same way that got runs on the board for bands like Skid Row and Spread Eagle.
|
Shadowland - 1992 Ring Of Roses
| |
Another all-star prog-rock release, featuring Clice Nolan, and contributions from members of Threshold.
|
Sighs, The - 1992 What Goes On
| |
Hailing from Massachusetts USA, this four piece specialise in a brash commercial pop a la The Rembrandts veering into a harder melodic style of say The Riverdogs.
|
Sko Torp - 1992 Familiar Roads
| |
Now here is one guy who can sing. Blessed with a voice from heaven, Soren Sko should pack up his bags and head off to Nashville, where he'd be a superstar for sure!
|
Southern Sons - 1992 Nothing But The Truth
| |
Melbourne's Southern Sons have been one of Australia's best loved melodic rock exports during the 90's. The addition of the talented Jack Jones to what was essentially their previous incarnation The State (reviewed elsewhere on this site), really gave the band that extra edge in terms of vocals and guitar playing.
|
Syndia - 1992 Syndia
| |
This is some of the finest melodic rock to have ever passed through these ears, and though these boys sing in their native tongue, the music is pristine, to the point of superlatives being pointless.
Contains audio tracks.
|
T-Ride - 1992 T-Ride
| |
For a trio, these guys surely pack a punch: technically adept, resourcefully different, with a flair for the dramatic. It's no secret that Queen and Van Halen have been a big influence on these boys. There is a funky element to their music too, not unlike Extreme from their debut.
|
Tonto Tonto - 1992 Mirror For The Blame
| |
Tonto Tonto are a band with a certain element of charm and style about them. Sounding as if they are just as comfortable playing large arenas or small cafes. First consideration for comparing notes would rest at the door of the first Riverdogs or the Mr Reality album.
|
Total Eclipse - 1992 Total Eclipse
| |
Formed from the ashes of early 80's LA metal band Sound Barrier and Bus Boys, Total Eclipse combine the approach taken by fellow black bands Mothers Finest (a la their 'Black Radio Won't Play This Record' album), and Living Color, the latter being an obvious comparison considering the Total Eclipse image.
|
Triumph - 1992 Edge Of Excess
| |
This was the first and last Triumph album that did not feature original guitarist and vocalist Rik Emmett.
|
Valentine, Robby - 1992 Robby Valentine
| |
Debut solo album from Dutch keyboard wizard Robby Valentine.
|
Von Groove - 1992 Von Groove
| |
I can sum up this album in two words: 'absolutely monstrous'.. One of the hardest rocking albums to come out of Canada for a long while, and for the fact that's it's their debut is even more astounding.
|
W.A.S.P - 1992 Crimson Idol
| |
'Crimson Idol' is more of a Blackie Lawless solo album. Something fitting of his personal epitaph. This is an autobiographical concept album, with Blackie taking on the lead, rhythm and bass guitars as well as keyboards and production.
|
Wall Of Silence - 1992 Shock To The System
| |
Wall Of Silence are essentially the band The Works Part II. This is a much improved effort from their earlier life, no doubt helped by the production hand of Mike Slamer (of City Boy and Streets fame).
|
Warrant - 1992 Dog Eat Dog
| |
When 'Dog Eat Dog' hit shelves in 1992, every former admiring hack shot the album down as an attempt to fit in, with Warrant toughening up their sound and adopting a meaner image.
|
West Of Sunset - 1992 West Of Sunset
| |
An unlikely Swedish duo who manage to release a credible set of tunes on their debut album. Originally coming together a few years earlier under the monicker Fingerprintz, the pair put on a strong showing of earthy melodic rock, drawing upon influences such as Michael Learns To Rock. The sound is very mid-west oriented, with a few modern pop drawstrings in there for good measure.
|
White Heart - 1992 Tales Of Wonder
| |
One of my favourite bands of all time. Surprising really because of their religious bent, of whose views I don't fully subscribe to. But when you dig deeper there is nothing on show but sheer utter class!
|
Wildside - 1992 Under The Influence
| |
Although released in the dawn of grunge and without little fanfare, 'Under The Influence' remains one of 1992's overlooked gems and a constant source of listening for me to this day.
