Background
Gary Myrick is a Texas boy raised on the blues from way back when. And as the old saying goes, 'you can take the boy out of Texas, but you can't take Texas out of the boy'. That statement definitely holds true for Mr Myrick. Originally playing a guitar style not far removed from Stevie Ray Vaughan, Myrick cut his teeth in the bars of Fort Worth/Dallas before moving out West to California to make his mark. People will best remember him from his band Gary Myrick And The Figures, who had minor chart success with the song 'She Talks In Stereo' during the early 80's. Not many people will know that he nearly started a band with John Waite, and that most of the material off John's 'No Brakes' album, had a heavy hand from Myrick.

The Songs
Myrick however secured a solo deal with Geffen, and left John to it, which eventually saw the release of his smash hit 'Missing You'. Myrick's solo deal saw him release the 'Language' album in 1983 followed by this one 'Stand For Love'. The album is a perfect foil of Gary's southern guitar style mixed with that 1980's hi-tech pop style, a la Rick Springfield. A strange combo but somehow made to sound effortless by Myrick's unique style. From the synth pop balladry of 'When Angels Kiss' to the Texas roundhouse of 'I Was A Painted Picture', the album is indeed a contrast of painted musical stylings. We even get a remake of his hit 'She Talks In Stereo'. Some of the more appealing tracks are the upbeat and rockier efforts such as 'Hearts Pound' and 'The World Watches On', following hard on the heels of Springfield's 'Tao' album.

In Summary
If there is a definitive tag to this album, it sounds like it was produced during the 80's, such are the trademark sounds and instrumentation which comes through. Overall it has more of that modern pop feel rather than the tried and true Texas guitar strut Myrick is better known for. Check out the link above to see what Gary is up to now.
