One of my favourite pop rock/AOR albums ever. At the time, the track 'The Warrior' was a staple on radio the world over, and is still one of those archetypal 80's anthems.. something you remember the decade by. The band started out with guitarist Zack Smith as the creator, joined by Mack and Elias. At this point, the band also included Benji King on keyboards and erstwhile Frankie La Rocka on drums. Singer Patty Smyth joined in 1982, and soon after the bands first recorded effort, a 5 Track EP for CBS was released. Tracks like 'Goodbye To You' and 'Loves Got A Line On You' did very well, in fact CBS have since said the EP is their best selling EP of all time. The band gigged all around the USA, doing tours with Hall And Oates and The Kinks in particular. Two years later, the band returned with their sophomore album 'Warrior', and what an album that was.

The Songs
All of Side One would have to be the complete pop/AOR collection ever put onto one-side of a vinyl platter. Starting out with the aforementioned hit single 'The Warrior' written by Nick Gilder and Holly Knight, followed hard by the stirring 'Beat Of A Heart' an effortless and cool sounding tune. 'Hands Tied' is the quintessential radio anthem, complete with backing chants by Tycoon's Norman Gershon and Franke (Franke and the Knockouts) Previte. My favourite pairing would have to be the subtle and shimmering AOR of 'Less Than Half' followed by 'Only The Young', yes the track Journey failed to put on their 'Frontiers' platter a year before. Scandal perform it admirably here. Not that Side Two is weak. It isn't. The Bryan Adams flavoured 'All I Want' is brimming with confidence, strong guitar lines matching the vocal intensity of Smyth. Ballad time doesn't reach us until track 08 'Say What You Will', smooth and supple to the ear, offset by the mildly energetic 'Tonight', ending with 'Maybe We Went Too Far', a track similar in tempo and style to 'The Warrior', especially on the chorus. In fact, it has a similar feel to Fake ID's 'Above And Beyond The Call Of Love'.

In Summary
Despite selling a million or more copies of the album, the band more or less returned back to square one on the slippery snake of fate, and folded some time around 1985 when Patty left the band to go solo. Smyth released two solo albums 'Never Enough' in 1987, and the self titled 'Patty Smyth' in 1992, featuring the #1 ballad with Don Henley 'Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough'. Not long after she hooked up with Tennis legend John 'you cannot be serious?' McEnroe, to whom she is now married with a couple of kids. Patty is still active in the industry, and in fact, a Patty Smyth and Scandal Greatest Hits CD is out there. This is well worth picking up, because it contains tracks from the hard to find 5 Track EP from 1982.

Much prefer the first EP to this. Wasn't Bon Jovi's first major gig opening for Scandal at the Ritz in NYC?

'Goodbye To You' from the EP was covered in the last couple of years by the Aussie chick act The Veronicas on the 'Hook Me Up' album. Also features a couple of Billy Steinberg co-writes and co-production jobs with Josh Abraham. Vikki Foxx from Enuff Z'Nuff is in the live band.

Recently added a clean vinyl addition of this album. It's top drawer female fronted AOR indeed with 'Beat Of A Heart' being a favorite for me. The vinyl jacket artwork is very cool with Patty all made up on the front and back.
