Though Pagan's Mind may have left it a bit late in 2002, this Norwegian prog/power band can lay a strong claim to album of the year. I'm not really supposed to use overly descriptive and flowery terms such as stunning, scintillating, exquisite, but I wouldn't be giving 'Celestial Entrance' the justice it deserves with anything less. The band was formed back in 2000 by Nils, Stian, and Thorstein, the 3 being familiar with each other through previous bands. The same year Pagan's Mind released their debut 'Infinity Divine' which received very good reviews from critics all over the world, and was produced by TNT's Ronni Le Tekro. Unfortunately the band had distribution problems, which is probably why I hadn't heard of Pagan's Mind until recently. I was checking out the Limb Music website (which is very good), and had a listen to the track 'Aegean Shores'. After hearing that track I had to get in touch with the band, and thanks to Nils sending me a copy of the album I can now let you in on a band that should become a household name among the prog metal circle.

The Songs
On 'Celestial Entrance', Pagan's Mind have blended the power of 'Mindcrime' era Queensryche, the progressiveness and melody of 'Images and Words' era Dream Theater, and the harmonies of TNT. There are also power metal elements and a couple of Black Metal moments. The cd is 70-plus minutes in duration, but like a good long movie you don't even notice the time, only the fact that Pagan's Mind are taking you on one hell of a journey. There are some epic songs, each around the 6-and-a-half minute mark. A couple even hit the 9 minute mark. Not all of the tracks break off on tangents as often as is expected with prog metal, but when they do it is usually to very tasteful solo's by Jorn and Thorstein, the two sounding like John Petrucci, Ronnie Le Tekro and Pete Lesperance (Harem Scarem) got together. Check out the solo's in 'Aegean Shores' and 'The Prophecy of Pleiades' for proof. Simply breathtaking. The guitar parts are excellent, and the vocals of Nils K. Rue stand out. Think Tony Harnell and Geoff Tate at the top of their game. Nils is easily in the same league. His performances on the tracks 'Dimensions Of Fire' and 'The Seven Sacred Promises' are of quite amazing quality. Actually, he's amazing on every bloody song. To help make the album sound even better, the band got top metal producer Fredrik Nordstrom to tweak the knobs. A clear, crisp and powerful production is the result. The drum sound in particular is fantastic.

In Summary
Regardless of whether you might find my overtly descriptive phrasing a bit offputting, you shouldn't be put off from doing what I did. Go to Limb Music's site, download the track 'Aegean Shores', listen in awe and immediately grab a copy of the album I rate as one of the best of 2002.
