Airless - 2002 Airless

Inaki Lazcano - vocals
Robert R Rodrigo - guitars
Efe - bass
Gas - drums

A very interesting release, and one to turn heads for sure. Another of the new brigade of Spanish bands, though not as pink and fluffy as labelmates 91 Suite or Golden Farm for instance. A harder guitar oriented edge is taken with Airless. Guitarist Robert Rodrigo, who is the mastermind here, spent a few years in the U.S refining his craft, and has applied his obvious talent to this quartet upon his return to Spain. Musically, they're striking a chord or two not dissimilar to debut era Masquerade, TNT, Vagabond and current era Harem Scarem. Yes, tall praise, but listening to it, I can see this album becoming a bit of grower in time. It has all the right ingredients, they utilise Spain's top producer Carlos Creator, and repeated listenings has seen it rise to the top of my playlist.

The Songs
Opening up with 'Brief Love' - we get a groove straight from the Ronnie LeTekro textbook of guitar-playing. 'Autumn Leaves' may sound like a wimpy title, the music however is not. Melodic rock with a modern edge. If one wants to be reminded of that classic Masquerade album, check out 'The Truth' for a memory jogger. Superb stuff. As is the ballad 'Holding On' - starting out restrained, but building to a mid-tempo wonderland. 'Until The Sunrise' sees the Harem Scarem comparisons being made, a few ideas pinched off 'Weight Of The World'? Coincidence perhaps, but who best to look for an influence? 'we're gonna shake this place tonight, up all night, until the sunrise'. Admirable words indeed during a Spanish summer. I'm sure you'll be tapping your feet to the uptempo melodic attack of 'The Answer', though the lyrics are somewhat suicidally tragic. 'Listen To Your Heart' is another full-on blood rush, with every guitar trick-in-the-book on display here. The other ballad 'When I Look Into Your Eyes' takes a while to get going, but the chorus is worth waiting for.. The bonus European track is the guitar instrumental frenzy 'The First', again a aural display by Rodrigo, with arpeggio sweeps all over the place. Cool!

In Summary
I'm not utterly sure what a burning computer monitor on the album cover signifies. Perhaps it should be 'hairless'? Whatever the case, the band have created a compelling argument. The guitar histrionics of Rodrigo is bound to see him become a new six-string hero of our times, while some of those vocal choruses are so damn good. Remember it's more hard rock than AOR, but it does ample moments of melody to be considered in the same breath.
