When I got this in the mail I had no idea who For My Pain were. Taking a look at the booklet, with its pretty cool band photography, I began to assume that, considering the name of the band, this was going to be pretty damn heavy with some vicious vocals. How monumentally wrong I was!!! For those that don't know, For My Pain is a bit of a Gothic Hard Rock/Metal supergroup out of Finland, containing members from Nightwish, Embraze and Eternal Tears Of Sorrow. The term supergroup is a fair description as 'Fallen' is a pretty special album. There is the typical melancholy sound associated with Gothic hard rock/metal, but these guys are incredibly melodic with a vocalist that would fit into any melodic metal band. Their sound probably is more reminiscent of Sentenced and Lullacry rather than those aforementioned bands. For My Pain certainly surprised me with their wonderful punchy hard rock anthems, soaring lead breaks and their fantastic vocalist Juha Kylmanen.

The Songs
Juha keeps within the range of the music, but I'm sure that if necessary this guy could really let rip. Nonetheless his vocals fit the music perfectly, especially on the choruses. Yes, the choruses, which there are plenty of. Along with the memorable riffing and vocals there is plenty of atmosphere, thanks to the understated but vital keyboards of Tuomas Holopainen. A good test of a great album is whether you flick past any tracks while listening. I never got that urge on 'Fallen'. They all did the business for me, especially tracks such as the immense 'Rapture of Lust' and incredible 'Dancer In The Dark', which features beautiful female vocals from Miriam Renvag (Ram-Zet).

In Summary
'Fallen' is another perfect example of why Finland is deservedly regarded as the best breeding ground for melodic metal in the world. For My Pain have lived up to their supergroup tag with a super - friggin' - album!!!!
