The release of At Vance's 'Heart Of Steel' was one of 2000's melodic metal highlights. The boys garnered plenty of attention and there was high expectation when 'Dragonchaser' was released. Unfortunately At Vance has not given 'Heart Of Steel' the follow-up it deserved. There is still the neo-classical metal that the band can do so well, but it lacks the extra spark that made 'Heart Of Steel' so appealing. Actually, it doesn't have much of a spark at all.

The Songs
You don't get any inkling that there are problems ahead during the first couple of tracks. The title track gets things going in the usual frenetic At Vance pace, with a million beats-a-minute drumming and lightening guitar work. The same can be said for 'Ages Of Glory', another gleaming neo-classical metal track. Into the third track and the cracks begin to appear. 'Crucified', a mid paced rocker, doesn't offer anything worth writing home about. It just doesn't get going. On either side of a good metal version of Abba's 'Winner Takes It All' are two absolute howlers. 'Heaven Can Wait' and 'My Bleeding Heart', both ballads, are incredibly boring and the worst songs At Vance have released. Things get better again with the next two tracks. Both 'Two Kings' and 'Too Late' are good neo-classical rockers, but still don't seem quite up to the usual standard. There are also a couple of instrumentals on the album. Olaf's rendition of Beethoven's 5th Symphony and 'Aces Death'. Unfortunately both are quite forgettable, especially 'Aces Death' which drones on endlessly.

In Summary
'Heart Of Steel' was a revelation to me and it really guts me to find the band taking a few steps back rather than increasing the momentum gained through 'Heart Of Steel'. Hopefully they'll find the spark again before the next album because I'm sure these guys can do a lot better than 'Dragonchaser'.
