I am not even going to begin going into what has happened with Timo Kotipelto and his previous band. If you need to know the gory details then I'm sure you'll find anything you need by searching the net. Suffice to say Timo is no longer with Stratovarius. I wasn't a big fan of them so it's no skin off my nose if he is now doing his own thing. And what he is doing now, in my opinion, far exceeds what he has done with Stratovarius. Firstly the music caters way more to my tastes. It's crunchy, slick and expertly played melodic metal with Timo Kotipelto belting out some great vocals.

The Songs
Though most of the album steers away from the sound of his previous band, the opener 'Seeds Of Sorrow' and 'Can You Hear The Sound' do head somewhat in that direction, the later has a stellar chorus by the way. The first single off the album is 'Reasons', which went to No.1 in Finland, and is a fantastic track. A punchy number with an extremely catchy chorus. Atmospheric is an understatement for 'Around', which begins slowly with twin guitar melodies and then chugs along nicely. 'Snowbound' is a moody little bugger of a track with sombre melodies and lyrical content. 'Journey Back' has the meanest riff of the album but one of the slickest choruses. Great stuff. The opening riff of 'Here We Are' is very sombre but the song gets very melodic with an excellent chorus. The most outstanding moment on the album is the second single 'Take Me Away'. A truly brilliant mid tempo melodic rocker with one of the best choruses heard this year, super melodic guitar playing and magnificent vocals.

In Summary
Having been in Stratovarius for 10 years, I'm sure Timo's removal from that band must have hurt, which could explain some of the quite personal and sombre lyrics on 'Coldness'. However, rather than languish in self pity Timo Kotipelto has risen from the ashes and forged an album of high quality melodic metal. Whether his namesake and founder of Stratovarius Timo Tolkki can do the same remains to be seen.
