If you peruse the Thin Lizzy history books, you will find agreement overall that the early 1976 album 'Jailbreak' was their breakout LP. The band by this stage had become a twin guitar band, with both Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson combining well as a unit, despite a fractious environment with the band generally. Lizzy's prior two albums had issues, 1974's 'Nightlife' was beset by a weak production from American producer Ron Nevison, while 1975's 'Fighting' was produced by Phil Lynott himself, which probably wasn't a good idea. However, the style developed on that album segued into 'Jailbreak' and more or less became a template for the next three studio albums to follow.

The Songs
Released in March 1976, the album featured two hit singles, including the monstrously successful 'The Boys Are Back In Town' and the title-track 'Jailbreak'. Both songs showcasing the Gorham/Robertson combination as a six-string tag-team. Other songs which stood out were 'Emerald', 'Warrior' and 'Cowboy Song', all highlighting Lynott's preference to write about the down-trodden and under-privileged.

In Summary
Lizzy's 1976 'Jailbreak' tour was cut short due to a hepatitis illness to Lynott, It meant that two albums were released by the band during 1976, with 'Johnny The Fox' following later in the year.

This, along with 'Black Rose, is my favorite Lizzy studio album. Phil's humble heartfelt vocals and those twin-guitar harmonies...

I've always been more partial to 'Chinatown' 'Renegade' and 'Thunder and Lightning.' They may have been considered the more obscure releases, but that was Lynott at his best for me.

I thought it was high time to start fleshing out the back catalogue. We may do some more..
