I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

This lot come from Switzerland, and are re-treading the cause for rock n roll in a glam sort of way. One of the blokes looks like a spitting image of Paul Stanley, and as you can imagine with a dress sense that smells of the 80's, this is where Van Arx focus their attention. In fact, these Swiss-ters were born out of the year 1984, when Kiss and Motley Crue were high up in the popularity stakes, and even though they were popular on the Swiss circuit, they walked away from this style during the early 90's, only to rediscover the joy in 2014 at a reunion gig. Once you're addicted to rock n roll, it's hard to ignore, as this quartet found out.

The Songs
Getting past the pseudo identities is pretty easy, not so the fun-time music. It's certainly not as heavy as their yesteryear heroes, though there is trhe occasional sabre-rattler on display here. Leading off with 'Make My Day', this is a rollicking affair, though the mid-section slows up for a breather. The solo section is also very cool. The next pairing of 'Stand Together For Rock And Roll' and 'Tonight' are straight ahead rockers with a fun-time element included in each. 'Rock And Roll Master' dips a toe into the murky waters frequented by AC/DC, though it ends up sounding slightly sleaze-based, especially those gang-chants. 'Rock Battle' is possibly the heaviest track here, though the combination of the music and the cheesy lyrics is totally European 80's metal.

Listening to 'Crazy' was like experiencing a lite version of Steel Panther, but without the smut. The last time I heard the phrase 'Bang Your Head' on a song, I have to go all the way back to Quiet Riot's 'Metal Health'. Van Arx's version is very good, and smokes along with some top guitar riffing. The wonderfully titled 'I Want Some Girls' sits center-stage of this genre. Where would we be without them? The song-title to 'Send The Devil To Hell' might appear like something off a Stryper album, but these boys have some fun with it without resorting to tossing a bible into the crowd. Van Arx sound slightly more serious on 'It Is Over', while 'You Like To Party We Love To Rock' is a resumption of normal glam/sleaze transmission.

In Summary
'Stand Together For Rock And Roll' might not be that original or ground-breaking, but since most of the GDM readers are fans of the 70's and 80's glam rock/metal scene, then this lot drop in without needing an introduction. I've been assured these guys have an exciting stage show inclusive of all the pyrotechnics. Coupled with a bunch of new songs on this platter, Van Arx might be worth a look-in for all those lucky enough, and close enough to get a glimpse/piece of the action.
