Background
Now a Nashville resident, Stefanie Johnson has used her musical nous to build herself a career which looks like gathering steam. Johnson was born in the musical hotbed of the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, in the city of Allentown, the place that Billy Joel sang about way back in the 80's. The drive to become a better songwriter and performer has culminated in her debut album released by Escape Music, and features a couple of well known guests too. Johnson adopts a style that is part modern contemporary country along with some female pop rock. Sure, Nashville has its share of female performers in this style but let's be honest, we don't get to hear about them outside of that bubble so most of us are none the wiser. But the fact that guys like Paul Crook (Meat Loaf), Ken Dubman (Prophet), Charlie Calv (Shotgun Symphony) and Punky Meadows (Angel) are all on this record means that by default, Stefanie Johnson gets a review here at GDM.

The Songs
It's hard to avoid the Nashville influence on Johnson's vocal delivery, where I'm hearing similarities to Shania Twain and Jennifer Paige, though the musical style is slightly different. The album is a mix of mild rockers and acoustic pop-rockers which is possibly the ideal blend of songs that suits Stefanie's style. 'All I Know' which opens the album is a gritty number, 'Master Of Disguise' initially gives the appearance of a meek pop tune, but the guitar work is solid throughout and keep things at the rockier end of the scale. For the majority, the songs sit at the softer end of the scale. 'Hello Love', 'In My Shoes', 'The Song I Was Meant To Write' and 'We Will Fight' are all indicators of this, which is AOK by me, considering I just reviewed the excellent Jennifer Paige album 'Starflower' to which this album similarly compares. 'We Will Fight' in particular is a superb song.

In Summary
An interesting release for Escape Music, highlighting a talented singer trying to make a musical statement in the congested world of the Nashville scene.
