Background
This is a Dutch trio with at least two of its members doing time during the 80's and 90's with other well-known Dutch bands. Andrew Elt was the voice behind 80's hard rockers Sleez Beez who released several albums for Atlantic, while bassist Martin Helmantel spent nearly two decades with prog band Elegy. Helmantel and drummer Joris Lindner were the two principle guys behind this new trio, with Elt being persuaded to join after initial reluctance. Compared to their past track-record, 7 Miles To Pittsburgh is a completely different beast. Certainly not representative of the furry one on the front cover.

Musically 7MTP deliver a varied set of tunes. If I was to pigeon-hole this album, it would be toward the progressive rock side of things. Some of the more enjoyable tunes included the tidal shift of 'Lost And Found', the melodic rough-edge of 'Pittsburgh', and the bombastic prog of 'Earth Dance' which starts out quite heavy and for me this is the pick of the bunch. There are a collection of lighter songs such as 'Damn', '21 Grams' and the sing-a-long 'Jambalaya' which acquit this band very well in the prog rock stakes. The production is very good; spacious and airy, and for a band which started out with a loose collection of ideas, the songs on this album have come together quite nicely.

Nice to see Andrew Elt back. He was a fantastic frontman for Sleez Beez. When we met for a pint in the early 90s for a Kerrang! Interview that was never published we discovered we'd attended the same school, albeit he left a year before I arrived. This is a great album.
