Background
Considered to be Argentina's best heavy metal band, are Buenos Aires based Helker, a band who have been in operation since 1998. They are fairly well-known on the South American circuit, usually being the first port of call as a support band to all the big major European players who tour the continent. Helker have since 2013, been signed to AFM Records, with the latest 2017 album 'Firesoul' being their second outing for the German label, though the band have released a number of other albums prior to their AFM tenure. 'Firesoul' is just how I like my heavy metal served up. Loud and proud, riffs galore, solos coming at ya like a lion looking for Sunday dinner, and the occasional pinch harmonic for musical seasoning. In parts, this is industrial strength heavy. Think solo era Rob Halford or even 'Painkiller' era Judas Priest. Toss in a handful of other outfits such as Primal Fear and your HM pot is stewed.

The Songs
'Fight' (how coincidental given the Halford comparison) is Helker down to a trademark stamp, while singer Diego Valdez exhibits a Ronnie James Dio inflection throughout most of the tracks. Again, the faster tempo numbers is where Helker shine. Factor in the trio of tracks toward the end, including: 'Stay Away', 'Break Your Chains' and the title track 'Firesoul'. Adding a bonus track or two, we see a version of Black Sabbath's 'Neon Knights', which is admirably covered, and show where these boys influences are derived from. The two tracks which offer something different is the melodic metal of 'The One' and the ballad 'Empty Room'. Both have the heat taken off them, and show the band in a subdued manner.

In Summary
Along with Gunner, Argentina have two prime-time contenders in the metal realm. 'Firesoul' is a big sounding album, and with Mats Sinner and Ackim Kohler in the production and mixing chairs, Helker are now in the crosshairs of metal fans globally.
