Background
This Italian combo from Genoa made their presence felt during the late Noughties with a series of albums for Lion Music. They sort of dropped off my radar after that, despite releasing their last album for Italian label Scarlet Records: 2014's 'Enfer'. I actually quite liked this band, with singer Giorgia Gueglio's strong vocal presence, and Pier Gonella's neo-classical inspired guitar playing. Arriving in 2017 with little fanfare, is their new album (again for Scarlet Records) called 'Wine Of Heaven', I'm quite interested to see what they've been up to.

The glue which holds these songs together is the guitar of Gonella, a growling tone for the most part, which allows Gueglio to twist and turn her vocals. The production is quite clean, and not overly thick as per most European metal projects, and as a result the songs are given breathing space. Highlights include the opening pairing of 'Drink Of Me' and 'Space Of Variations'. The former features a neat keyboard intro, melodramatic vocals, the latter shifts gears into a faster tempo, guitars and drums taking center-stage. 'Hot As Blood' riffs strongly, though the slide guitar soloing was a bit unusual. The Malmsteen like finale 'Making Love' was also pretty decent. 'Wine Of Heaven' has its moments, and overall it's good to see Mastercastle back on the horse.
