Steelback were a hard rock band originating from Nanaimo, BC, Canada. They formed in 1977, with keyboardist Rob Gawthrop and guitarist Michael Toth as the original mainstays. At one point, the band featured in their ranks a young singer by the name of Darby Mills, who joined Steelback in 1979 but left the band to make a name for herself with the Headpins alongside alumni from other top Vancouver bands including Prism and Chilliwack. Mills was replaced by Glen Duley, and Steelback finally ended up on vinyl in 1982, five years after their start. 'Five Star Lady' was the result, a 5 track affair, notable for Duley's vocal similarity to a lower register Geddy Lee. The band played all over British Columbia, but only lasted as far as 1983 before throwing the towel in, as they couldn't land a major record deal. As a footnote, Steelback reformed for a reunion concert during 2012 in their hometown of Nanaimo.
