Background
We made mention of this Swedish band a few backs in our Upcoming Releases section on the GDM Forum. Signed to Pride And Joy Records, the band contains Swedish vocal stalwart Göran Edman, but the band is the claim of guitarist and principal songwriter Kent Engström. Formed in 2014 in tandem with drummer Oje Lindskoog, the duo bought in others the following year and eventually Backwood Spirit took shape. The band have been described as classic rock meeting bluesy hard rock, which reflects the musical upbringing of this quintet.

The Songs
There are only 8 tracks on the album, so this makes for another digestible listen for those that are time challenged. If you like loads of 70's styled organ work a la Uriah Heep or Lucifer's Friend but played over a mostly pastoral backdrop, then Backwood Spirit could be the deal for you. Edman's distinctive vocal can be heard doing its thing on the opening shuffle of 'Gimme Good Lovin'. 'Piece Of The Peach' could be throwback to the late great 70's, and it's no surprise to me that this band appear anchored in that decade. Fine by me. Lots of flanger guitar effects introduce 'Ain't Got Love', again, the swirly sound takes us back into time. 'Take Me Home' is very understated, raw, without too much in studio processing wizardry by the sounds of it, 'When Love Comes Around' is my pick of the bunch of the 8 songs here, a solid classic rocker if ever there was one. 'Soul To Soul' changes identity and direction several times throughout, very much like the 'runaway train' they sing about in this song. 'Get Your Wings' drifted on the air, kinda light and fluffy, and the Rhodes styled keys at the end was good. The closing 'Water Of Change/Rainbow' perpetuates the band's leaning toward a pastoral soundscape, the intro to this sounding like the start of the Rush classic 'Xanadu'. Tell me it isn't so? lol.

In Summary
There have been many Swedish bands playing in this style over the years, though admittedly, most of them veered toward the progressive rock path. Backwood Spirit probably to a lesser degree. This album though very capable, doesn't really set my bunsen burners alight, though to be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing these guys play live, as I feel they could be a very different proposition on stage. So, there you have it.

George, most likely you would be very disappointed after you saw this band play live, at least with Göran Edman as their frontman. I am sorry to say that he is dreadful on stage with a great voice, but with as much charisma as a broom.

Swazi I saw Edman fronting the Touch 'reunion' (sic - only one original member) at Firefest a few years ago, and it is curious cause apart from the sad look he was quite voiceless at least that day, and boy Touch/Craig Brooks pipes are indeed hard to follow.... thumbs down

Correct, I was there as well. I saw him 2 years before in Ludwigsburg/Germany and there his voice was better.
