Background
In the 80's if there was ever a band that could be consistently relied on for picture-perfect pop, it was Liverpool's China Crisis. Essentially a vehicle for songwriters Gary Daly and Eddie Lundon, China Crisis would later and wrongly in my opinion despite a couple of albums produced by Walter Becker, be classed as the British version of Steely Dan. Indeed, their music grew smoother as their career advanced (think Danny Wilson and Prefab Sprout) but they never lost sight of putting to tape what matters most, intelligent and uplifting pop with ear-bending hooks.

The Songs
Benefiting from immaculate for the time production from Mike Howlett (ex-Gong and pre-Police outfit Strontium 90) 'Working With Fire And Steel' is a brimming with great tunes from the percolating synths of the title track to the beautifully melodic 'When The Piper Calls'. The moody and nuanced 'Here Comes A Raincloud' is a stunner as is the albums top 10 hit 'Wishful Thinking' which holds up to fellow and more successful Liverpudlians OMD and A Flock Of Seagulls synthpop balladry, minus the latter's frightening hair style decisions. The curtain closes on what is possibly the best cut of the set, the fetching 'The Soul Awakening' which places an artful signature on what many believe is the best of the band's intriguing catalog.

In Summary
China Crisis spent the later half of 1983 and a good part of '84 touring up and down the UK and Europe as well as across North America's highways and byways with Simple Minds promoting the record and while success in the States proved elusive; Gary and Eddie continued to chart British hits into the early 1990's.
