Yep in Argent, especially as Rod Argent and Jim we’re cousins.

Background
The other week I picked an array of 10 albums, constituting what I thought was an initial best top 10 in the West Coast category, Volume 1. We are going to prepare a Volume 2 selection, and one of the contenders that may crop up is this album. I don't know a lot about Craig, but we recently find that his album 'A Perfect Fit' got a full reissue from the French label Sunset Dreams Records. They say it's a classic, we'll have to give it a listen to find out whether that claim is true. As the story goes, Craig was signed to Warner Bros on the back of his demos, which were heard by the pair of Gary Katz (Steely Dan's producer) and Lenny Waronker (Warner Bros President). 'A Perfect Fit' was Craig's only album, but considering he got a recommendation from the highest level within the industry, maybe the Execs knew more than the rest of us at the time?

The Songs
In a case of making round pegs fit into square holes, I find that many of the songs here work a treat, while some don't quite hit the spot. 'Throwing It All Away' pitches itself in the same territory as late 70's exponents Buckeye. More melodic radio rock than west coast I'd suggest. 'Shuttle To Mars' and again we're talking similarly to the track that went before. 'High On Love' is a piano dominated piece, with a myriad of vocal harmonies to flesh it out, changing tack once more for the addictive AOR of 'Can't Do Without It', the first highlight of the album for mine. 'After Hours' pulses along with a steady assault of bass-popping, the sax is bought out of the studio back room to provide some contrast. Second highlight is 'Be True', with stabbing piano and flowing synths coupled with some biting guitar work. Nice. 'She's Waiting' has some good moments too, undulating between mild verses and more urgent choruses. The third highlight is the drama-filled 'All Talk', plenty of reference points here, including some late 70's disco crossover pointers. 'Our Last Chance' as a ballad didn't really float my boat, slightly better was the album-closer 'How Long', which started out like a Toto inspired piece, but the wind was taken out of the sails by lack-luster verses.

In Summary
From my observation, I'd say half of this album is decent, the other half had an identity crisis; with some of the songs not quite knowing what they wanted to be. I'm thinking maybe these songs were half written by Craig, perhaps put away in a drawer for a little while, then taken out months later to be completed, because some of them change shape and don't flow as well. Considering 'A Perfect Fit' had never seen a reissue up until 2017, my observations are a small price to pay to invest in what will most likely be the only reissue CD/LP you'll see in modern times.
