What happens when you combine three of London's prime movers in the hard rock scene? namely Iron Maiden, Bad Company and FM? You get A.S.A.P. that's what! I recall this album as if it were yesterday, and I was a big fan of what Adrian Smith was trying to achieve outside his role with Iron Maiden. ASAP (meaning Adrian Smith and Projet) had its origins with a late 70's band called Urchin, which also included guitarists Colwell and Barnett at various stages. Urchin folded when Smith joined the Irons. ASAP had an earlier incarnation as The Entire Population of Hackney during 1985. It was from this association that ASAP was born.

The Songs
With three guitarists in the fold, plus Ringo Starr's son Zac Starkey on drums, this was always going to attract some attention from the rock press, and it sure did, with the attention on Smith and his focus away from heavy metal toward AOR. Though Smith's vocals weren't exactly Steve Perry like, there are some terrific tracks here, and things get off to a cracking start with 'The Lion' accelerating to cruising speed in next to no time. The highlights for me are the title-track 'Silver And Gold', the rather excellent 'Down The Wire' and the longer but captivating 'After The Storm'. Other tracks to hold their own include 'Fallen Heroes' and 'Misunderstood' with it's chorus by-line of 'Mistreated'.

In Summary
Despite the attention given to the album through the press, the release of this colelction plus two singles, 'Silver And Gold' was deemed a disappointment at the box office, the band signing off soon after. Smith left Iron Maiden in 1990, and formed Psycho Motel for two albums during the mid 90's, eventually returning to the Irons in 1999 along with Bruce Dickinson.
