I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

Background
In recent times, these Finnish power metallers have been described (at least by one clever dick on YouTube) as disco metal. This couldn't be further from the truth, as Battle Beast provide one of the better examples of melodic power metal heading into 2017. This Helsinki based band have been around since 2008, and have put out three albums (2011, 2013, 2015) prior to this latest beauty: 'Bringer Of Pain'. However, it is the first album not to feature founding guitarist Anton Kabanen, who left the band in 2015 citing the age old conflict: musical differences. Still, the band roll on, you can't keep a good thing down when it is trundling along like a high speed freight train!

Because the band are female fronted, one may think that the nearest equivalent is the Swedish combo Amaranthe, but not really. Battle Beast don't use trancey keyboards and dual (or triple) vocals for effect. No, it's just straight down the line power metal, with Noora Louhimo packing a punch behind the microphone from the outset. Not since Veronica Freeman from Benedictum have I heard this much power from a woman, though no doubt there are other ladies out there who do a decent job in their respective bands. Just check out YouTube for evidence.

The Songs
The excitement begins with the bouncy 'Straight To The Heart', melodic to the core, the chorus as catchy as hell too. The title-tack 'Bringer Of Pain' is balls-to-the-wall metal, featuring a chugging guitar attack along with a huge demonic gang-chant. 'King For A Day' lays off the heavier angle for a moment, preferring instead to deliver an anthem about political power. I'd swear this is all about Donald Trump if you watch and read the lyrics video for this on YouTube. 'Beyond The Burning Skies' comes close to the template built by Amaranthe, the song featuring piano, synths and orchestration. Sounds great to me. 'Familiar Hell' sees Battle Beast taking the commercial route. Not exactly power metal - a lighter version thereof. Tomi Joutsen from Amorphis joins Noora for a singalong on 'Lost In Wars'. An ambient styled anthem, with clearly separated vocal parts between the duo. With a new Thor movie just around the corner (Ragnarok), it's appropriate then that BB deliver 'Bastard Son Of Odin', though this is probably not a tune they'll be singing out loud in Asgard - I would think. 'We Will Fight' continues the path of metal anthems, while 'Dancing With The Beast' could be an AOR track, such is its lighter nature and melodic style. Also concluding things on a lighter note, 'Far From Heaven' is a lush piano led ballad. Quite nice, but metal purists will probably choke on their corn flakes!

In Summary
After being recommended to me by former GDM writer Luigi Cisaria, I spent a few hours trawling their earlier material; coming away more than impressed. Noora Louhimo has only been with the band since 2012, the previous singer Nette Valo played with the band from 2008 through to 2011, but I'll admit that Battle Beast have only gotten better with time, culminating in their best album thus far. There's a few videos from this on YouTube, so if you can handle the swing from power metal to lighter material in the space of one single sitting, then 'Bringer Of Pain' should be considered.
