Lancer are a Swedish band who have clearly announced their arrival on the power metal scene. Coming together in 2012, these boys have released an EP and two full-length albums prior to this bombastic affair 'Mastery', released in January 2017, and their first for Nuclear Blast. Singer Isak Stenvall has a vocal style similar to Bruce Dickinson and Tim 'Ripper' Owens, but the band aren't really Maiden nor Priest clones, far from it. They have their own style and they deliver it with urgency, as if they late catching a plane.

The Songs
Lancer provide the perfect entrance courtesy of the damaging 'Dead Raising Towers', just quite what the lyrics are about I haven't quite worked out, but the guitars and rhythm section have distracted me no end. Title track 'Mastery' heads off into Vicious Rumors territory, intense and brutal in delivery. The seven minute 'Victims Of The Nile' has a Queensryche feel, Stenvall brigning some Geoff Tate moments to the table. 'Iscariot' gallops along like a Shanks Pony, while the tempo slows to something more manageable on 'Follow Azrael', giving everyone a breather. 'World Unknown' is Lancer's power-balld, and things nearly slow to a crawl. 'Widowmaker' reminded of American metallers White Wizzard, a band I really enjoy, so to make a comparison to them can only be a good thing. 'Envy Of The Gods' is dialled back for the first half, but is let loose like a rabid dire-wolf for the back-end. 'The Wolf And The Kraken' (an unlikely pairing I'll admit) is a reminder of old-school 80's metal, keeping it mid-tempo and under 4 minutes long.

In Summary
'Mastery' is quite a varied set; shorter songs amongst longer epic-styled pieces. Fast, medium and slower paced songs, and an array of influences which certainly look as if they are sourced from the 80's, which is how I like it. Lancer have recently been out on tour with Hammerfall and GloryHammer, and have been turning heads in the process. It looks like Nuclear Blast have got a 'goodie' on their hands, and they look certain to play at Wacken during the summer if things pan out right. A band to keep an eye on.
