Background
Operatic metal is a place I don't normally go to, but this full length CD from Norwegian guitarist Frode Hovd and assorted friends under the banner of Aldaria passed my desk the other week, so I took time to have a listen. The line up of contributors is exceptional, showcasing a who's who of European HM mostly. The sound is comparable to Helloween and Avantasia, but the concept and story is closer to Ayreon based sci-fi.

The Songs
The concept of Aldaria is that of a halfway destination between Earth, Heaven and Hell. A place and dimension where the fallen are reborn as angels, and sinners come to be redeemed or forever or banished to Hell. However, the darkness has found a way into Aldaria, and the protectors known as the Lightbringers are tasked with saving Mankind. Sounds like the premise to a movie right? But with a HM soundtrack to boot, you can be assured there's no airy fairy music on display.

Given that there are so many players involved, the Aldaria project had the potential to be derailed at the earliest opportunity due to the musical input coming in at all angles. However, things are kept as cohesive as possible, with Hovd the catalyst for holding things together. The songs weave through galloping metal anthems with soaring vocals and choirs, spoken narrated parts, and lilting piano based ballads.

In Summary
Everything you would expect from a Metal Opera project is here within these eleven tracks, at just a tick over 1 hour. It'll be out soon on German label Pride And Joy.
