Background
Very much like 2016's Maglev's 'Overwrite The Sin', Geishas in Vitro have seemingly come out of nowhere. In reality this is a band out of Buenos Aires, Argentina and like the Maglev album ploughs that rich furrow that combines the sounds of early Queen, Robby Valentine and Valensia, and anyone who's a regular visitor to GDM will know that I'm an absolute sucker for this type of stuff. Apart from the scant information that's out there on the old Interweb there's not really much more about the band I can tell you.
The Songs
This 5 track EP, (which for now is only available as a download but shortly as I've been told will be a physical CD), is a delight, full of Brian May like guitar flourishes and delicate but on occasion extravagant vocals. Opener 'Cenestego (Aquelarre)' really does set the scene for what's to come, coming across like something that Queen would have recorded in the mid 70's, running through a series of styles all within its 4 minutes duration, and is a real statement of intent. 'Hacer-Doler' slows it down a little and is reminiscent of the work of Valensia particularly when it comes to the vocals. Everything here is sung in their mother tongue and rather than being a distraction it lends itself nicely to proceedings and provides the whole shebang with a taste of the exotic. 'Osculo Infame' and 'Lola' both benefit from lavish arrangements, the latter seemingly the bastard offspring of Queen's 'Save Me' and 'Teo Torriate' and we finish off with the wonderfully titled 'Nubas Lesbianas' a glorious romp that wouldn't be out of place on 'Sheer Heart Attack'. Nicely produced, with the emphasis on the guitar histrionics and vocals, this sort of release, although looking back for its musical references is the sort of thing that really does keep me enthused about music.
In Summary
I've recently had some contact with the band and I'm told that they are currently putting down tracks for a complete album which should arrive later this year. As previously stated I'm a complete sucker for this type of thing and this EP ticks just about every box for me.. wonderful stuff!! This is a young band that has seemingly lots to offer and what an excellent way to get 2017 going.. long may it continue.
