At the end of the 2016 calendar year, I'm beginning to wonder where my next aural fix will come from. And out of nowhere, it arrives. I need look no further than the Brazilian combo called King Of Bones. These guys hail from Sao Paulo and unbelievably, released this CD on their own resources. This is hard rock that sounds like it's major label stuff. I'm kinda floored listening to this, and if the Ozzy Osbourne era circa Zakk Wylde, combined with Dio , a dash of Badlands, and Tesla are your bag, then you should be looking for a copy of 'Don't Mess With The King' el pronto!

The Songs
This is quality titanium proof hard rock, and as far as I'm concerned, this puts all other 2016 contenders (yes, all the stuff you've heard on Frontiers etc) to the sword. There's not a dud to be found on these thirteen tracks, and I don't think I've been this excited by a band playing this style since.. well.. Aces High' 'Ten N Out' classic from 1994. Starting out with the exotic acoustic 'Intro', KOB pound down the walls with 'No Way Out', the Zakk Wylde axe work from Rene Matela the means in which to provide the breakthrough. 'Hold Me Closer' is an album highlight for me. The band and their management obviously thought so too, as it became the song for their first video. Massive riffs and very melodic all round. 'Wherever You Are' steals a few licks from the Jake E Lee casebook, and don't be fooled by the acoustic intro to 'Walking On The Edge', this one smokes heaviness in the same way as Swedes Hellfuelled, themselves Ozzy Osbourne clones of the first degree. 'Black Angels' sounds like Tesla at their heaviest, some nice acoustic interludes amid the thick guitar phrases and deft organ work. 'Blinded By Faith' slows things up, and includes some radio/news broadcasts to add to the songs lyrical intent. It's pretty heavy still, probably the best method to get the message across.

'The World Goes Round' could be Gotthard on steroids. Not least because of the organ work. This one includes a massive solo from Mr Mateala. Wow! KOB dip into ballad territory with 'Goodbye Yesterday' with astounding results. A guy like Jorn Lande could do worse than pick up a song like this for his records. 'Dry Your Eyes On Me' is no tear-jerker, if the song-title was anything to go by. This one sounds like a heavier version of Steve Newman, probably due to the vocal similarity from Julio Federici. More guitar genius from Mateala can also be found here. 'I Am' features some prominent synth work from guest keyboardist Fabio Ribiero, while the guitar solo is one Reb Beach would sit up and take notice, that I'm sure. 'No More Lies' is delivered with force and urgency, the album concluding with the amazing 'Point Of No Return', which definitely points in the direction of a guy like Gus G and his many bands/projects. The guitars simply sizzle on this one, in fact, you could apply reverse psychology and start listening to the album from track 13, and work your way backwards.

In Summary
'Don't Mess With The King' has everything I enjoy about a modern band employing 80's and 90's influences, and getting it right 100% of the time. This is one of the better hard rock albums of 2016, it's only a shame I heard about these guys so late on in the year, but better late than never. For those who like it loud and proud and with boat-loads of melody, then King Of Bones should be investigated.. post haste.
