This American metal band from New Jersey have been in existence for many years. I have been aware of them for some time but have never bothered getting around to listening to them, until now that is. Because this new album 'Sins Of The World' is damn good. Initially, I saw them featured on YouTube, and they had a very sci-fi looking record cover with an alien face on the front. The music is particularly heavy, and that's what impressed me. So, a double whammy. Excellent record cover and heavy metal music to suit. I'm in. I remember these guys were signed to Metal Blade Records way back in the 80's. 'Battle At Helms Deep' was one of their records if I recall. A minor metal classic back in 1985, which had a touch of 'Lord Of The Rings' about it, and were placed in the same box as a band like Fates Warning. I used to buy a few LP's from a record shop in Australia back in the 80's called Metal For Melbourne, and they used to plug bands like Attacker, Omen etc, so it all comes flooding back to me now.

The Songs
Two of the key men from the 80's era were drummer Mike Sabatini and guitarist Pat Marinelli, and both remain members up to this album, though Marinelli has just recently decided to leave, but he has committed some guitar parts to 'Sins Of The World'. If you like OTT vocals in the style of James Rivera, then look no further than Bobby 'Leather Lungs' Lucas. This guy can seriously belt it out, and when I heard him this is what sold me on reviewing the CD. The band set off on their epic journey with 'A Time Before The Darkness', an acoustic and spoken word entrance that segues into 'Sins Of Man'. Duelling guitars, booming vocals and a frantic rhythm section gets us underway. Lucas takes control early on, and sets the bar from the start. 'Carcosa' is hellfire and brimstone, thick riffing and a powerful back-end conspire to recreate that classic 80's sound. If it's a behemoth or a mammoth you need, go no further than 'Garuda'. If you can get beyond this wall of sound good luck to ya! Five tracks in, and the lights have yet to be knocked out. 'We Rise' continues the sonic assault, I can guarantee that no supporters of Hillary Clinton were maimed or killed in the making of this song. And while we're on that subject, just what is the meaning behind the brutal assault of 'World Destroyer'? Surely not Donald Trump? 'Choice Of Weapon' on the other hand is the near perfect musical metal bullet, watch out for the shrapnel and discharge. 'Archangel' combines Attacker's fusion of power and trad metal, while the closing duo 'By The Will Of Crom' (a short piece) which segues into 'Where The Serpent Lies' keeps these guys clicking away to the very end of what will surely be labelled a future masterpiece metal album.

In Summary
Attacker do what they do well, though probably not as clinical as a 'Vicious Rumors', but they compete well in the same space as a band like Helstar for instance. In fact, they are probably better! So what does this all mean at this late stage of the year? Well, firstly, I'll have to go back and listen to some of those old Attacker LP's. Sounds like a good plan for Christmas. Secondly, these guys could sneak their way onto my top 10 list for the 2016 year. Not exactly AOR or melodic rock, but I do have a secret penchant for heavy metal that can't be questioned. If you like it loud and proud, go check out Attacker's 'Sins Of The World', out now via Metal On Metal Records.
