I'll admit I haven't been the biggest fan of TOPT throughout their long history. They've been consistently 'inconsistent' for my liking. Some good moments admittedly, some poor moments scattered across the years as well. Surprise to me that their second release during 2016 (a reissue from Angel Air Records for 2004's 'Noises In The Cathouse' was the other), is pretty damn good. If you wind back the years, you'll recall that guitarist John Sykes was once a significant part of the band, before departing for a serious gig with Thin Lizzy during the early 80's. I bring up Sykes name, because some of the guitar work heard here, is very reminiscent of his style and input on those early TOPT albums. This was the first notable finding upon listening to this self-titled affair. Let's dig our claws in..

The Songs
'Only The Brave' is a aural cyclone that leads the album. It was also the first single lifted back in August. No guesses why, it's a terrific opener, the Sykes-like guitar is very powerful. 'Dust' crunches things down like a metal-press while 'Glad Rags' could be Poison's 'Unskinny Bop' resurrected! Guitar riffs fly off the handle on 'Never Give In', in tandem with some strident double bass work from drummer Craig Ellis. The ballads 'The Reason Why', 'Praying For A Miracle' and 'Angel In Disguise' are all pretty decent too, but it's the hard rockin' fare which is doing it for me, such as the pumping 'Do It Again' and Devil You Know'. If there is one slight let down it's the cover of 'I Got The Music In Me'. TOTP really didn't need to do this. Maybe another cover song more appropriate would've been better.

In Summary
TOPT signed their latest record deal with Swedish label Mighty Music back in 2015, and they've created a pretty good album, now their bakers dozen release. There's a lot to like here, and old buggers like myself who remember the NWOBHM movement way back when will remember all the bands who were popular then. Many have since fallen by the wayside, but some continue on with renewed energy, including these guys. Check this out, hopefully like me, you'll be very surprised.
