Background
A recent review here at GLORY-DAZE is the 2004 album 'On The Edge' from Vancouver band Renegade. Well before that effort hit the shelves, there was another album of earlier material available. Eight tracks at just under 30 minutes listening time is enough to get the appetite going. 'Back From The Dead' is the album in question, and though it was originally released in 2001, the material goes back years before: the late eighties in fact. Just how this lot managed to avoid detection is a lesson that perhaps is only rivalled by Osama Bin Laden. Back from the dead? I don't think so, how about 'uncovering the veil of invisibility'? lol.. The line-up between the two albums is relatively similar, with a few changes here and there. The catalyst throughout is Jim Buckshon who's status in the band is that of a book-end. Plus, he handles the songwriting, production and as the credits elude, even the photography! Musically though, it's that period AOR sound so typical of Canadian bands (particularly those from the Western side of the continent). If the likes of Body Electric, Agent or Worrall tune your dial, then Renegade are right up your frequency! The vocals of Marty Sippola are a particular delight, sounding so frightfully familiar, though I can't quite put a name on it. A Canadian equivalent of Max Bacon might be the closest I can get.. but I'm sure there's someone else in the mix who I can't quite place..

The Songs
With the arrival of 'Standing Out In The Rain', it signals Renegade's purest AOR intent. A lovely tune with all the right ingredients for us melodic rockers! The follow-up 'The Best Of Me' is memorable for its juicy chorus and those growling guitars.. not too heavy not too light.. (are we talking Cereal here George?). Certainly digestible is the Worrall like 'Sign Of The Times', the good-time rock 'n' roll is evident on the upbeat choruses on what is mainly an energetic track. 'Prisoner Of Your Heart' is more mid-tempo AOR followed by the booming sound of 'Big City Nights', a highlight for me so far. 'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark' is quite an intense tune, a darker edge. It is the closest to the material put out by fellow Vancouver residents Body Electric from that same late eighties era. Funnily enough Jim Buckshon says that he's never touched base with the B.E guys, despite the fact they live in the same town! The closer is an instrumental 'Betrayal'.. perhaps the odd one out, notwithstanding it's primarily a musical piece.

In Summary
If you're gonna go out and buy 'On The Edge' then pick this one up as an entr?e before the main. These CD's are too hard to come by, and when the demand creeps up in a year or so, you'll kick yourself for not buying it sooner! Go to the website below, or purchase it from any decent online CD Supplier.
