An interesting new band based around the vocal talent of Australian Kurt Lowney, with ties to Japan and Nashville. Talk about international! Added to that are the pairing of Mitch Malloy and Tristan Avakian, who both have ties to the band Red Dawn. Sounds like a wining recipe to me. Lowney is now based in Nashville as is Malloy, but this sounds nothing like a generic Nashville concoction. Kaato (Japanese for 'Kurt') is a high energy affair that riffs hard and jumps in the air with all the precision of a star jump done right!

The Songs
For starters, the vocal harmonies on this album are astounding. There's a big classic rock influence here, the Kaato biography and press release citing Aerosmith, Boston, Styx and Led Zeppelin as examples. Lowney does have a Tommy Shaw vocal inflection, thanks to the high-tenor vocal parts, and the hard rockin' bluesy vibes of the band certainly hark back to a few contenders from the past. All the songs were penned by Lowney and Malloy, while the guitar parts from Avakian takes Kaato to another sonic level. Favourite moments include the opener 'SDRnR' which means 'sex, drugs and.. you can guess the rest'. A uptempo rowdy crowd pleaser. Add to that, 'Time Stands Still', the promoted track 'High Time', plus the bluesy infused rockers 'Guilty Go Free' and 'Only A Day Away', the latter displaying a hint of Aerosmith.

In Summary
'Kaato' the album as mentioned, is high energy, raw, but definitely melodic and sweeter than honey-infused whiskey! I was kinda surprised that no major label picked them up, but in this day and age, who needs a big label if you have the Internet for your friend and support base? Very likeable album, and it will be a case of watch this space with Kaato. Check them out.
