Background
Violet Janine are a new Swedish band off the block, making a name for themselves after only a short time in existence. Led by vocalist Janine Nyman, the band operate in the same field as fellow Swedes Nubian Rose (though probably not as heavy), with tough songs and a couple of well known guests to make things interesting. They were previously unsigned in 2015, but now they have been picked up by Danish label Lions Pride Music, the CD up for release halfway during the 2016 year. Joining the band is Mano Lewys on second guitar, who has played with numerous Swedish outfits in recent times. The band haven't mucked around, inviting former Black Sabbath singer Tony Martin in for one song, plus Bonafide member Pontus Snibb, plus two videos have been recorded as well.

The Songs
We hit the road early with 'Heat Of The Highway', a road song for melodic rockers. Not overly heavy mind you, just crisp and jangly. A nice opener, a bit like Jaime Kyle in her prime. VJ kick up their heels on 'Devil In Me'. Though there's more electric energy, it still keeps to the friendly side of the road. It goes to show you can be highly effective without going all out. 'Tell Me' is a mid-tempo tune which could be early 80's era Heart before they went mega-successful. 'Everyday's A Fight' is a ballad that showcases Janine's voice to great effect, the song itself struggled to threaten the metronome though. Again with bands like VJ, I much prefer it when they press the foot to the pedal; a with the case of 'Shut Up'. If it were me, and I was the producer, I wouldn't let them record any ballads whatsoever.. lol! The first change-up tune is 'So Much More', which was written by Tony Martin, and you hear him co-share this song with Janine. It's more of a blues rocker than anything, with the harmonica used as the solo instrument. 'Better This Than Nothing' returns to melodic rock territory but this sounds very generic. 'Story Of Your Life' is another ballad, which the album could've done without. However, things are redeemed with the excellent 'Down On My Knees', which tries to crack the shell as a harder-edged track, and I think it succeeds in that regard. This is the track which features Pontus Snibb, and finishes the album on a high.

In Summary
This is a useful album which will promote Violet Janine into 2016. Some of the songs didn't quite do it for me, which probably means a concerted effort in the songwriting department is required to lift this band out of the lower leagues into a more prominent position. I reckon they have the tools to do it, so good luck to all concerned.
