Background
Sweden's JoNo made quite an impression upon me last year with their 'Silence' album coming over all early Queen with suitable bombast and intrigue. So much so I made it my favourite album of the year, and I know George reviewed their second album 'Requiem' some time ago, but with grateful thanks to the band themselves I have managed to get my hands on their difficult to find first album.

The Songs
This is essentially a Johan Norrby solo album as he assembled various musicians to help me complete the album some of which went on to join him when they finally became a fully fledged band. In the accompanying letter the band enclosed with the album, they themselves stated that the production values and arrangements were somewhat lacking as opposed to their later work. Sure the arrangements are not quite as lavish that appear on the 'Silence' album but it does show that the ideas that Norrby had were there from the beginning but were not quite fully realised just yet. Also, the tone of the album is much more pop based with nods to the likes of Mika on the wonderfully infectious 'Feeling', but you do get some primetime Queen like balladry on the stately 'Just A Man'. Norrby's vocals are perfectly suited to this, with that Freddie Mercury like tone to them. 'The World Is Spinning' in particular displays signs of things to come on the later albums with more of a rock feel to it, and an suitably extravagant vocal performance .. and I do hear hints of Queen's 'Flick Of The Wrist' in there too! 'The Meaning Of Life' also hints at things to come with its clever arrangement and light and shade textures and it's many twists and turns. I know that George made reference to too many piano led ballads in his review of 'Requiem' and they are also in evidence here, but it's something that they do very well, and I think they finally got the mix of harder and lighter material just right on the 'Silence' album.

In Summary
This album was a really nice surprise, not all the ideas used on this album are fully formed yet and this really could be seen as a work in progress. But still, this is a little belter of an album, and if you like your Queen which has that slightly more pop slant to it then this could be worth searching out. JoNo have just recently signed to Frontiers, so I'm looking forward to hearing a lot more from this most impressive of bands.
