British label Escape Music doesn't release many CD's per year anymore. Usually one or two a month now, as has been their case now for a number of years. So when they do release something, you get the impression they put some solid effort into ensuring that all the bases are covered for maximum impact. Take this new Canadian female fronted hard rock outfit Epic. They look good, sound good and have a CD that should appeal to all of GDM regulars without too much trouble. Having a good looking sheila up front always help, and surely Tanya Rizkala is more than just your average eye candy. Tanya has a great set of pipes, and adds considerably to what is an album worth hearing. The basis of this band stem from Tanya's Lebanese origins, while Mario spent time playing in Europe too. Epic is based out of Canada now, so perhaps a Transatlantic shift was in order to prepare Epic for their next adventure.

The Songs
Epic's music is aimed squarely at the female fronted genre. Think Femme Fatale, Romeos Daughter, late 80's Cher, Heart and Saraya, while gifted guitarist Mario Agostine comes from the Vito Bratta school of guitar-soling. Alessandro Del Vecchio provided the mixing desk skills. If I understand correctly, Epic recorded and released this on their own accord in 2015, but Escape stepped in with a distribution arrangement in 2016, which is how the melodic rock industry picked up on it. Released in April 2016, 'Like A Phoenix' has so far seen a handful of reviews online, all reasonably good by the looks of it. The material is very melodic, with a focus on Tanya's strong vocal, and the stylish guitar playing from Mario.

In Summary
The album is just shy of 40 minutes, and I think you'll get good value for money here. As you'll find elsewhere in this sub-genre, there is little of originality here, but if you're a sucker for 80's female fronted hard rock, then Epic should be on your calling card.

This is overall pretty good. A few really good songs mixed with a few that don't move me as much. I prefer the harder-edged tunes to the softer ones. But the performances and production are good enough to keep me interested between them.
