Not to be confused with the Thin Lizzy from a few decades ago. No, this lot come from Sweden, and came to the attention of the melodic rock world thanks to their signing to AOR Heaven, and their January 2016 debut in tandem with fellow Swedes Wigelius. GS started lfe back in 2007, and have been through several line-up changes, and participated in a couple of Swedish talent shows. I'm not sure that is the way to go, as I don't really want to see melodic rock bands entering a lolly scramble with genuinely untalented riff-raff, and idiotic punters who vote by phone.. lol! Sorry to sound like a snob, but that's the reality of it. Grand Slam certainly have talent, and the whole scene in Sweden seems to have been hijacked by Eclipse, H.E.A.T. and Work Of Art, so every new band in this genre is going to be compared unfairly to those three.

The Songs
The lead vocals of Andy Sinner (formerly of Trash Queen) will take some adjusting to. He hovers in the higher register and can definitely belt it out, but my ears will take further convincing. The rest of the band do their bit for the cause, and we can hear that there is potential on the melodic rock horizon, so no problems with that aspect. The bio says that the material on 'A New Dawn' is a balanced mix of the past and present Grand Slam sound. There's no doubting that the aforementioned H.E.A.T. is very much an influence. The arrangements are all stock-standard Scandi approved, so there's a familiar ring to the bell. 'Rock My World' and 'Face' are proof of this. 'Don't Leave' is a powerful statement. In fact, I'm sure I've heard this song before under the guise of a different name, but I can't quite place it. Give me a few weeks.. lol! 'I Wanna Live' is reasonably good too, but everything else sort of went over my head unfortunately.

In Summary
I come away not quite convinced about Grand Slam. Early days obviously, give them a few albums to bring themselves up to par with some of the best going round. As I said, most new Swedish bands operating in this space will be compared to the obvious ones as named above, but at least the bar is set high to maintain quality control. Let's hope Grand Slam can meet the challenge ahead of them. [word count 407]
