This Tennessee native has led one very interesting life. Though coming to our attention as the owner of two major label records with Geffen between 1988 and 1991, John Kilzer is an accomplished academic (he was a University Lecturer prior to his Geffen deal), and is now also the owner of the PHD from Middlesex University in England. In his youth, he was a pretty decent Basketball player back in his mid 70's University era as well (I didn't realise how tall he is), but these days, Kilzer carries the tag of Rock N Roll Preacher, as an adjunct to his day-job as a Memphis based Minister with the Methodist Church. Just prior to his Geffen deal, Kilzer was a lecturer at Memphis State University, but his life after the release of 'Memory In The Making' meant that he was travelling both the USA and overseas.

The Songs
John's music, when given the southern treatment comes off similarly to fellow Memphis resident Jimmy Davis. You could throw a few other names in the hat, such as Tom Cochrane, Bryan Adams and Billy Chinnock, just to make things interesting. The album features two prominent songs in 'Green, Yellow And Red' and 'Red Blue Jeans' (a very definite colour therapy orientation going on here). Along with this duo, the album strikes a rich vein of melodic and commercial led bluesy rockers. 'Heart And Soul' is one of my favourites here, so too 'Pick Me Up'. Kilzer falls back to some acoustic led efforts too, the lush pairing of 'Memory In The Making' and 'Give Me A Highway' stand out, but overall, the album makes for a decent 47 minute interlude.

In Summary
'Memory In The Making' saw a global release, and the album was easy enough to pick up on LP and eventually CD at the time. Even down in NZ, I was playing this LP often enough to wear out the turntable needle, but these days the album is difficult to find on disc. One wonders whether this will get some reissue treatment given it's originally a Geffen title, and still holds major appeal. Kilzer is still releasing albums, though not in this genre, more a country roots style. [word count 368]
