No doubt we'll see a new Eclipse CD later in 2016. Possibly also a new Pretty Maids album too! In the meantime, settle into the latest Swedish and Danish collaboration featuring personnel from both bands. Martensson and his Eclipse buddies dominate the melodic hard rock scene, while Ronnie Atkins and his long-time cohorts in Pretty Maids are a Danish institution. Not much really needs to be said about either band, as they are extensively written about at GDM. Nordic Union are the result of Frontiers management looking for new possibilities into 2016, and as an idea, I think it was a worthwhile attempt to try something different. Personally, I could have dreamed up thousands of possible musical hook-ups which would appeal far more widely than Nordic Union, but take nothing away from this venture. It looks like it has legs.

The Songs
Musically, many might view this simply as an Eclipse album in disguise, just with a different singer. Straight up! I wouldn't begrudge any of you who thought similarly. The guitar work and the arrangements I've heard before, and though this is delivered with precision, I was kinda hoping for something a little bit 'left of center', rather than a repeat of Eclipse with touches of Def Leppard or H.E.A.T. thrown in for good measure. Most of the songs sort of wash over me. It's not like I'm reviewing this at the end of the day when I'm absolutely buggered (I am actually, but that's besides the point), and I'm feeling indifferent about the songs. It's all immaculately presented, and the quality is excellent, but.. it just didn't hook onto my consciousness.

In Summary
Perhaps 'Nordic Union' is one of the reasons why many older fans of melodic rock are losing touch with the current trend. With a label like Frontiers coralling all the talent into one yard, there is the danger that many of their releases are becoming cookie-cutter like. I've touched on this topic often over the decades, I'm at the risk of repeating myself year after year. Where is the next unique talent going to come from within the melodic rock industry? We're still waiting. However, if you drool over a band like Eclipse, then your Christmas has just come early! [word count 377]

This is a good effort that I'll be listening to a fair amount. I don't put it quite at 'killer' level for my tastes, but it does sound quite good. Good workout music, which serves me well for about an hour per day.

I love the CD. I think the biggest reason is that because I love the melodic side of Pretty maids and mixed that with the song writing of Erik Martensson - that makes this release made for me. Smile

Good to see you back online Pete. Are you still in touch with Luigi?
