I was a bit cranky last week, waiting for various things to happen with the website transition. God it's good to be back. Didn't Gary Glitter sing a song like that? dogrun

It's been awhile since we last looked at German power-metallers Brainstorm. We have to go back to 2008 in fact. It's not as if Brainstorm have disappeared off the map. No, they have been a constant entity for AFM Records in all that time, with an album every second year or so. Though we are a few albums behind the times with these guys, their line-up has remained constant, and they are still delivering quality hard edged power metal. When listening to this, I tagged it as cinematic power metal. There's a bit of Avantasia and King Diamond styled imagery, which makes them stand out from their peers. Don't be put off by what you see, and don't categorize this as cartoon metal, because this is damn heavy and industrial strength.

The Songs
'The World To See', and as per the video below, is an example. You can hear this band deliver BIG! 'How Much Can You Take' eases up ever so slightly, and at this point, I'm thinking Andy Franck is sounding nothing like the bloke I remember from his former band: prog metallers Ivanhoe. The guitars are in spitfire mode as 'We Are..' launches riff after riff, offset against a prowling bass line. The chorus features one of the biggest gang-chants heard in recent times. The tempo goes for broke on 'Where Angels Dream', and no, it's not all heavenly and full of fluffy clouds. This is as beefy as an Abbatoir in peak season! The title-track is next, the chugging guitars of Loncaric and Ihlenfeld lead the way. The lyrics and imagery look and sound like they come from a B-grade horror movie! 'Scars In Your Eyes' is leaden metal, so typically European and so powerful too. Twin guitars pervade Sky Among The Clouds', as ir hovers between traditional heavy metal and a denser form of hard rock.

In Summary
Production wise, there is lots to hear underneath the hood. It's not all about blunderbuss guitars and a bulldozer rhythm section. There are some nifty pieces which add interest overall. Recent comments on 'Scary Creatures' say that's good, but the predecessor 'Firesoul's is possibly better. That means I most likely have to go and listen to that one! AFM Records will release 'Scary Creatures' as a standard CD plus a Deluxe Edition which bolts on an extra DVD. Go to it.. [word count 390]
