Background
Not too long ago I was heaping praises on Gothic hard rock band For My Pain. Well, thanks to Charon I can do the same again. I was hugely impressed by For My Pain and my thoughts run along the same lines for 'The Dying Daylights'. Before I had listened to these bands I was under the impression that Gothic Hard rock would be heavy as hell and completely depressing. Apart from the subject matter, which you wouldn't expect to be too fluffy, the music is surprisingly melodic and catchy with very good singers.

The Songs
Unlike their supergroup counterparts, Charon have been chugging along for over 10 years with 4 albums released in that time. From one album to the next they have grown, 'The Dying Daylights' showcasing them at their most melodic and accessible. Charon effortlessly bridge the gap between 80's goth rock, melodic hard rock/metal and modern hard rock. There are a number of tracks that could, or should, get airplay on rock radio, especially the ultra catchy 'Death Can Dance' and 'Guilt on Skin'.

In Summary
Though Charon have their modern rock aspects, they also have a couple of highly skilled guitarists who pull off some wicked soloing. Not to mention the rest of the band who excel as well. The album has done very well in their home country, now it's time for the rest of the world to appreciate Charon. They're Finnish, by the way. As if they wouldn't be!!!
