I was a bit late jumping onto 'The Nature Of The Beast' due to its January 1981 release date. Also, this was a transitional timeframe for me as I was about to leave home and head out into the wide wide world. I didn't really settle until March, and by then I recall my first couple of purchases from my new found freedom were: Chilliwack's 'Wanna Be A Star', Triumph's 'Progressions Of Power' and Pat Travers Band 'Crash And Burn'. April Wine would follow soon after. It would become the band's biggest selling LP to that point, and finally put the band on the map. Recorded in England not long after their 1980 European tour, the LP was co-produced by Myles Goodwyn and Mike Stone (Asia, Journey, New England, Whitesnake).

The Songs
Most of the tracks have a load of appeal. Of course, the big hit from the album is the radio ballad 'Just Between You And Me'. Another album chestnut is 'Sign Of The Gypsy Queen' which was a minor 1972 hit for an obscure Canadian artist called Lorence Hud (yep, you never heard of him either?.. Ed). Thankfully, the band do crank it up on tracks toward the end of the album (side two) such as 'Caught In The Crossfire', the fiery 'Future Tense', plus the coarse 'Crash And Burn' which surely is some of the heaviest stuff April Wine has ever recorded? 'Big City Girls' and 'Bad Boys' are pretty useful numbers too.

In Summary
April Wine enjoyed chart success with 'Just Between You And Me' and overall, the band's improvement was quite noticeable since their 'First Glance' period. Personally, I really loved their next album 'Power Play', which was my favourite of theirs, even though it didn't sell as much as this one. But it was probably the album which had them sounding glossy and akin to a million bucks. [word count 310]

Some great songs here, especially 'Future Tense' and 'Crash and Burn'.
