Background
The 1990's for many music fans was a very desolate time. Both AOR and progressive rock went underground, hiding from a veritable Tsunami of Flannel, Lilith Fair folkies and the cesspool known as Gangsta rap. The quality of releases in both genres during the decade was questionable as well although good things were happening if you looked hard enough. Here in America, Spock's Beard, Echolyn and Glass Hammer all released credible prog rock debuts but my favourite was the first of two discs from New York based October Project. The sweeping self-titled disc was referred to by one critic as 'Gothic rock for adults', but of course it was much more than that with strong Celtic vibrations and superb songwriting and lyricism that drew the listener into a distant and shadowy autumn.

The Songs
Fast forward two years and based on the success of the first album, the follow-up 'Falling Farther In' astonishingly enters the Billboard charts at number ten but is it as good? I think so and while there's a bit more pop, the arrangements are still very progressive. October Project's main attraction is the unique vocals of Mary Fahl who sings in a deep but strong Celtic influenced register that at times is quite breathtaking. Think Toni Childs (anyone remember her 'Union' album?) and songs like soaring opener 'Deep As You Go' with its ornate acoustics, the Bruce Hornsby-ish 'Something More Than This' and the poignant 'Johnny' which lands somewhere between Sarah McLachlan and sophisti-pop kings Prefab Sprout make for a satisfying and memorable listen.

In Summary
Sadly 'Falling Farther In' despite its early numbers failed to do much business and without a direct reason from Epic, the label dropped October Project and the band quickly imploded. A moderately successful solo career followed for Mary Fahl and the band has reformed off and on without her numerous times and are currently set to release a new CD 'The Book Of Rounds'.

For a while Emile had a band called NOVEMBER Project, I was always going to get their CD as I really like October Project but never got around to it and it's long gone now, it disappeared along with the website when October Project reassembled (quite) some time back...I think it was an E.P. I've a couple of Mary Fahl's solo albums, From the Dark Side of the Moon is a take on the Floyd album and is quite an interesting interpretation. I didn't realise she had released another couple so might have to get them.
