LEGACY - STAND AND CONQUER (2003, INDEPENDENT)
Randy Allen - vocals
Darin Moore - guitars
Patrick Palmer - bass, vocals
Andy Hall - drums
Background
When I got this album in the mail I was a bit confused. At first I thought it was the Legacy that are signed to Chavis Records. Nope, this is an independent release by a Dayton, Ohio HM quartet, and is even their second release. Unfortunately, you can hear that these guys are independent from the production, which lacks the cut and thrust required for this genre.
The Songs
That is a pity because these guys make up a pretty good band otherwise. Legacy play traditional American melodic heavy metal in the style of
Armored Saint and
Metal Church. Vocalist Randy Allen is quite versatile with a
John Bush range. Guitarist Darin Moore is quite nifty, but the underdone production detracts somewhat from their good performance. In particular the drums lack punch and the guitars are a little low in the mix. However, beneath the surface there are some cool songs, such as the rampaging title track and the very impressive power ballad 'Without You'.
In Summary
'Stand And Conquer' is a prime example of a good band who could very well have benefited from a top-notch production crew. In this day and age it shouldn't happen, because elsewhere we've heard demo's with a superior sound. These guys may be a great live band but they need to sort things out in the studio if they want to gain the attention that they probably deserve. We are sure that in time, Legacy will address that issue.
