Many of you will remember Nils Patrik Johansson from his days with Astral Doors. He was regarded as the childspawn of Ronnie James Dio. He has the classic metal voice, not too far away from Norwegian vocal god Jorn Lande. Civil War is a newish Swedish metal band, featuring a few blokes from the equally fantastic band Sabaton. Civil War have been around since 2012, and their music is blunderbuss approved firepower. The imagery of civil war era military garb is a fantastic way to get the band's point across. This is real heavyweight stuff. Many influences on show, I'll leave it up to you to pick the eyes out of it.

The Songs
'Gods And Generals' is Civil War's second album. From 2015, it follows their début 2013 'The Killer Angels'. The band theme is all about war and conflict, and not necessarily confined to the Civil War theatre either! Much of it is in the modern era, as you'll see with the song-titles such as 'Bay Of Pigs', 'Back To Iwo Jima' and 'Schlinders Ark'. The boisterous 'Braveheart' is a metal anthem dedicated to Scottish hero William Wallace. Much of this stuff is just off the scale, and I'm loving the way they get their lyrics and message across. I'm not so sure they would convince the old war vets down at the local RSA with their musical performance.. lol! Perhaps a few beers might lighten them up! Modern elements of music are conveyed. Take a listen to the synth work slicing through the high-tide mark on 'USS Monitor', which ploughs through the waves with next to no effort. The nautical theme is retained with 'Admiral Over The Oceans', while the title track 'Gods And Generals' is sensational stuff! Wow. The band toss in two bonus tracks: 'Knights Of Dalecarlia' and 'Colours On My Shield'. Bloody hell!!

In Summary
Civil War certainly hit my gee-spot with ease. It's metal, it's bombastic, and it's appealing. I think Nils is sounding much better singing this sort of material than the dungeons and dragons stuff from Astral Doors. As for the guys from Sabaton, well, I think I'm on an exploratory journey through their back catalogue - if Civil War is anything to go by! Give these guys a listen. You might be surprised, as I was!
