I remember reviewing their first album from 2009 and thinking to myself, this is a very good outfit. However, due to other commitments elsewhere the band members reconvened for this, their second album six years later. And in my opinion, it's been six years overdue. I'm a sucker for big bombastic Scandi melodic rock bordering on power metal, and Cain's Offering sit right in the centre-square of these two sub-genres. Though it is a super-group based on the pairing of Finnish legends Sonata Arctica and Stratovarius, I'm guessing.. like me, you'll find other influences on show here. If you can also imagine a melding of Brother Firetribe and Amaranthe, then this band have your preferences covered off four ways well and truly.

The Songs
There's a lot to digest on 'Stormcrow'. Styles range from operatic, symphonic, prog, speed and power metal. Not all at once mind you, and each track you can take on its own merits. Jens Johansson is a bit of a legend on keyboards. He's right up there in the top echelon of ivory-tinklers, and he offers up his array of tricks when best suited to the songs, and not the other way around. The opening title-track 'Stormcrow' is a real flight of fancy, fast-paced and flowing. 'The Best Of Times' steals some ideas from Amanranthe, that much is clear, but Cain's Offering don't have an Elize Ryd, and that is where the difference is. 'I Will Build You A Rome' is titanic speed laden stuff, so too the immense 'Constellation Of Tears', where the metronome is thrown out the window.

'Antemortem' is a full-on Nightwish styled work-out, and for those of you into this style, lap it up.'My Heart Beats For No One' restrains the speed but increases the melody. A power anthem for sure, with wanky guitar and keyboard parts to boot (that's a compliment btw!). The six minute instrumental 'I Am Legion' was probably unnecessary if truth be told, 'Rising Sun' a euro-speed metal ear-bash. For something completely different, the flowing ballad 'On The Shore' showcases the band with the electrics switched off for the first half of the song. CO could sound very interesting in an unplugged scenario.. perhaps in some faraway tavern up in the lakes district of Finland (hey, isn't all of Finland a lake district?).

In Summary
Frontiers might be getting a bit long in the tooth with these super-group outings, much to the annoyance of many. However, I'm hopeful we can leave Cain's Offering out of the debate as they do have a prior history, and this is pretty much a band offering rather than a project. I'll be giving this a bit more of a listen, in what is already a crowded looking play-list schedule for 2015. Now all we are waiting for is the second effort from The Magnificent, featuring Finland's Torsti Spoof.. More from Finnish acts later in the year. Bring it on..

This is pretty excellent stuff, has made much more of an impact than the debut. Actually its up there with the first batch of Royal Hunt albums.
