Without End - 2003 4 Track Sampler

Nicholas Georgakopoulos - vocals, drums
Michael Totta - guitars, bass

The Songs
These guys were kind enough to send me their 4 track sampler. I wasn't sure what to expect, with the description being progressive metal I figured it couldn't hurt to check them out. The only familiar aspect of Without End is their producer, Endel Rivers, who was behind the excellent sound on Black Majesty's debut 'Sands Of Time'. The production on this sampler is pretty good, perhaps needing a little more grunt in the rhythm section. Without End are a band that take a few listens to digest what you're hearing.

The Songs
The songs don't hit you from the outset, though they are quite melodic with Michael providing pleasing, fluent work on lead guitar. Nick has a good mid range voice, but I'm not too sure about including the female operatic vocals on 'Comfort Zone' and 'Analyse'. A bit more variety wouldn't go astray either.

In Summary
Before I forget, I have to issue a quick apology to the guys for taking a while to get this review done. A new baby was one reason, but to be honest the other was that I was having a hard time finding any comparisons to Without End. I've racked my brain, and scoured the net trying to find like-minded groups. What I can tell you is Without End don't sound like bands such as Symphony X or Pagan's Mind. Perhaps a moodier version of Enchant would fit the bill. Having Endel Rivers involved is an excellent move by Nick and Mike. With his guidance and their talent I think they can produce a quality debut album. Another Aussie band to keep an eye on.
