Background
I've been burned out on modern day power pop for quite some time with too many bands churning out third rate Cheap Trick, ELO and Jellyfish karaoke. The lack of originality was frustrating, so I've since moved on to other things while occasionally pulling out well-worn copies of 'Fresh Raspberries' and 'Radio City' to satisfy my hunger for sugar sweet pop, that is until a few weeks ago. As we all know, Facebook can be a very useful tool when connecting with both music fans and musicians which is where I met Dave Caruso and landed a copy of his latest effort 'Cardboard Vegas Roundabout'. If the name Caruso sounds familiar, you may remember the Miller Rock Network compilations put out by RCA in the mid-80's which included the power pop band as well as Glory Daze heavy-hitters as The Producers, In Pursuit and Pennsylvania's Magnum. Comprised of Dave and his three brothers, the foursome opened shows for Joan Jett, Burton Cummings, Corey Hart, Foghat and others while releasing a slew of EP's, Cassettes and 45's.

The Songs
Since then Dave has gone the solo route although this beautifully packaged double CD is his first output since 2004. Disc one or 'Main Road' is comprised of ten originals while disc two 'Slip Road' includes alternate versions and mixes as well as demos. It's a charming set, taking a cue from Crowded House, The Beach Boys and hosts of top grade singer-songwriters such as Matthew Sweet and Elvis Costello. The opening 'Mystery + Sweetness' takes it nice and slow with acoustic guitar and sparkling synth while the follow-up 'Champion' feels very much like the Beach Boys circa 1973's 'Holland' album. 'Hanging on to Home' has a wonderful Bruce Hornsby & The Range vibe and Caruso is no slouch in the lyric department either, with writing that is often poignant, introspective and topical such as the edgy 'Your Fake Friends' which reading between the lines takes a swipe at narcissistic social media. Disc two offers a number of tasty treats including a woozy acoustic version of 'Hanging On To Home' and three different but no less appealing versions of the lovely and sentimental 'I've Tried to Write You' although I'm not quite sure what the closing three second 'Clean edit' of 'Your Fake Friends' is all about. Dave?

In Summary
'Cardboard Vegas Roundabout' is worthy of the praise it's getting among the power pop intelligentsia. The music is fresh, catchy and above all original. Give Dave Caruso your support and check out his colourful web site for more info and yes, I've been eyeballing the Caruso 'The 80s Remastered' compilation CD.
