I'm a bit of a late bloomer with this American band. They've been around for a decade or more. Even broke up for a couple of years too. They've released a bundle of albums, all with Kivel Records it must be said, and if last years 'Suckerpunch' was anything to go by, then 'Defiance' just adds more to the Adraingale port-folio. 'Suckerpunch' was our first go at writing an Adriangale review, and no doubt there will be some back-filling of their prior discography to come (perhaps over the Christmas break?). In the meantime, 'Defiance' is now out, and was timed perfectly for the recent Melodicrockfest 4 in Chicago a few weeks back.

The Songs
'Defiance' the album is chock full of hard rock anthems, and is an easy listening experience all round. The thing I like about Adriangale's songs is that structurally they are straight-forward. Not overly complex nor full of tempo changes. Their songwriting works well for them and you hear it on their songs. The title track chugs into view as we welcome back the 2014 incarnation of Adriangale. All is well on S.S Defiance. There are some offset rhythm parts which give 'Yours Forever' a higher interest factor than usual. After a slow and cautious intro, 'Back To You' is driven along thanks to the boisterous chorus. Pretty cool song actually. We now start getting into the meat of the album, and a song like 'What About Love' stands out like a beacon. A typical Adriangale composition, complete with massive chant-a-long vocals for good measure. 'Fall', 'Sometimes', 'Warning Signs' and 'Fire' continues the good work, whereas 'Last Of My Heart' is the album's sole ballad. The closer 'Speed' is one of my favourites on the album, sounding like Billy Idol doing melodic hard rock!

In Summary
Take nothing away from these songs. It still sounds remarkably good, and like Harem Scarem before them, this band have their own signature brand that no one has been able to emulate yet. I still think I preferred the stuff from last years 'Suckerpunch!', but you can still investigate with confidence.

The impression that "Speed" sounds like Billy Idol doing MHR might have something to do with the fact that this actually is a Billy Idol track...
