For years now, Swedish vocalist Martina Edoff has been the go-to girl for many musical projects, providing vocal backup and expertise. I wasn't aware of this little fact, but she was one of the co-founders of the band The Poodles, along with her then boyfriend drummer Christian 'Kicken' Lundqvist. She's since moved on from that event, and in 2014 now has her own solo CD. It's taken her years to get to this point, even she will admit that it's probably taken far too long, but Martina has had many backers and supporters along the way. Martina's first love has always been female fronted hard rock. The Wilson sisters and Heart have had a huge influence on her musical life, and though you don't quite hear it consistently on this debut CD, the sentiment and spirit is no doubt close by.

The Songs
From the start, Martina's vocal is rich and powerful. 'On The Top' is as close as you'll get to Ann Wilson, and it had me wondering what Martina would sound like singing all those Heart classics? 'Back Home' sounds as if it has been striped with that Nashville crossover rock/country bar-code. I heard a hint of Shania Twain.. do you remember when she did some melodic rock tunes produced by Paul Sabu? This one has got a little rootsy twangy vibe to it, hence the comparison. 'Who You Are' had some snippets out of Europe's 'Never Say Die' ('Out Of This World', 1988) which sounded briefly familiar, a cool track co-written with Broke N Blue's Lars Abrahamsson. 'Hero' had me thinking Alannah Myles 'Black Velvet' from the get-go, but Martina puts her own indelible stamp on this song, which straddles that melodic bluesy style tailor-made for her excellent female vocal.

'Heartland' sounded like a few ideas rolled into one, more modern sounding than classic truth be told. The ballad 'Just Take My Heart' also sounds as if it has its roots in the modern day, with that bluesy raunch making an appearance yet again. 'Seeds Of Love (Mother Nature Song)' is the longest song here at over 6 minutes. It's a weaving mystical even folky piece that probably could be Heart's 'Dog And Butterfly' or 'Little Queen' era. The last three songs Martina lifts the bar. 'Seduce Your Mind' is anthemic stuff, big performances all around. 'My Moment' might be a ballad but it has its moments; tender-touch meets soaring power. The closer 'Before I Die' is no wimp-out. Martina goes out on full-throttle, huge vocals abound, especially that booming chorus, plus the guitars get to tear loose for once - on the solos. An excellent way to finish up.

In Summary
Finally, Martina gets to deliver the sort of music she's wanted to for ages. From my perspective, some songs worked, some less so. If it's about song choice, that can be easily remedied. I have to say, Martina's image is one for the ages. Classic 80's attire it must be said, with a poster-look that should have adorned schoolboys bedroom walls back in the day. Despite this being her debut CD, let's hope there's another one on the way!
