Yep in Argent, especially as Rod Argent and Jim we’re cousins.

Didn't Rodford also play in Argent and Charlie too?

Jim Rodford, bass player, The Kinks, Phoenix (I think?), but I remember him with The Zombies, saw live a while back. RIP

Forming in 1986, Pretty Boy Floyd were one of the last high profile glam metal acts to emerge from Sunset Strip. Flaunting an extreme glam metal image, PBF's sound was highly derivative, recalling in particular pre-Shout Mtley Cre. In 1989, with hair metal reaching its peak, the A&R department at MCA Records finally decided to get in on the act-by tossing a rumoured $1 million at the band, who at the time had played only eight shows. Their debut album was released in October 1989 and produced by Howard Benson.

The Songs
'Leather Boyz With Electric Toyz' title track opens with fast-paced riffing and chanting vocals, while lead single 'Rock & Roll (Is Gonna Set The Night On Fire)' is a typical stab at rock radio, incorporating multi-tracked vocal screams-much in the same way of early Warrant or Def Leppard. 'Only The Young' and 'Wild Angels' are the somewhat stand outs here, if anything capturing the sounds of the Sunset Strip at the time. Other songs include the raw ballad 'I Wanna Be With You' with a Hanoi Rocks-style vocal attack and the Crue cover 'Toast Of The Town' - with Steve Summers' vocals eerily similar to Vince Neil's nasal shrill. Most of this is superfluous fluff, with it's initial over the top approach petering out in the process. Despite taking to this in Junior High, listening 25 years later to Benson's muddy production and the group's penchant for cheesy lyrics is enough to make me vomit day-glow. No wonder this album was lost in the shuffle to better releases from L.A. Guns, Warrant and Motley Crue around the same time. The 2003 reissue featured a different cover and five bonus tracks, including "Slam Dunk" originally released on the Ellen Barkin movie 'Switch' soundtrack.

In Summary
Leather Boyz With Electric Toyz, peaked at No. 130 on the Billboard charts, and PBF blew more of MCA's dough before the label finally disposed of them in 1991. PBF would get redemption somewhat by a series of sold out live shows throughout the 90's and knowing the MCA suits lost a chance to sign a fledgling Seattle outfit called Nirvana.

Great to see you back Jeff, I enjoyed the review. The best bits from this album reminded me of Baton Rouge ... remember them ?

I gave this a blast yesterday. Good to catch up with it again. As Jeff says, it is a bit derivative, but hey, the vocal shout-outs and overall melody is pretty good. Not usually my genre of rock, but at least I dusted it off the shelf for a little nostalgia.. 'rock n roll is gonna set the night on fire'.. yeah!
